Sycamore Football Adds Calvin Schmidtke To Roster

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head football coach Trent Miles announced this afternoon (June 24) the addition of 6’0", 195 freshman quarterback Calvin Schmidtke (Tacoma, Wash./Lakes HS) to the football roster. Schmidtke has signed a scholarship offer with the Sycamore football program and will be eligible to begin play this fall.

"Calvin Schmidtke is a great addition to our football team as far as having someone that can add to the competition for the quarterback position this fall," Miles commented. "There is no doubt that he enjoyed a tremendous high school career, and we are pleased that he is going to join the Sycamore football family to begin his college career at Indiana State."

Schmidtke, who originally inked a national letter of intent at Washington State, completed an astounding 76 percent of his passes as a senior -- racking up 2,724 yards and 37 TDs with only 5 interceptions and rushing for 10 scores. He earned Tacoma News Tribune’s All-Area Co-Player of the Year, Seattle Times All-State, WashingtonPreps.com All-State and Associated Press Honorable Mention All-State plaudits following his standout senior campaign.

In addition, Schmidtke was named a TNT "Northwest Nugget" honorable mention, a Seattle Times Red Chip prospect and was a member of the TNT "Western 100". Schmidtke was ranked by Scout.com as the top quarterback to come out of the state of Washington (No. 15 nationally, and also was the top signal caller in the Northwest according to Scout.com (No. 42 overall). Additionally, he was a member of the Scout.com West Top 150 (No. 116) and was selected to play in the East-West All-State Game.

Prior to his senior season at Lakes HS, Schmidtke earned Associated Press First Team Class 2B All-State honors following his junior season at Life Christian Academy when he threw for more than 3,000 yards, completed 66 percent of his passes, and posted 46 TDs. Schmidtke was an all-league choice as an LCA sophomore after passing for 2,379 yards with 23 TDs and 10 interceptions.
