CARBONDALE, Ill.—Senior pitcher Lindsey Beisser threw a complete game two-hitter but it was not enough to give the Indiana State softball team the series win, as they fell in the finale 3-1 to Southern Illinois.
The Salukis struck first in the bottom of the first inning as a leadoff walk came around to score to give the Salukis a 1-0 lead over the Sycamores.
Both pitchers dueled until the Sycamore offense got going in the top of the fifth inning when Beisser led off the inning with a double to right center field. After a foul out, senior Olivia Andres hit an RBI single to get the Sycamores on the board and to tie the game at 1-1.
The Salukis offense answered the Sycamores call in the bottom half of the fifth inning as they score two runs, neither of which were earned, to retake the lead at 3-1 over the Sycamores.
After going down in order in the sixth, the Sycamore offense threatened in the top of the seventh as the Sycamores got runners on but could not get them across the plate as they fell 3-1 in the series rubber match.
"Our program took a big step this weekend as far as competing in this conference, against a great team and playing as well as we did," head coach Shane Bouman said.
At the plate for the Sycamores, Beisser finished 2-3 with a double while Andres was 1-3 with an RBI.
Beisser, on the weekend, finished with a 1-1 record, allowing just four hits and two earned runs.
The Sycamores will return to action Tuesday when they begin a 10-game homestand starting with Eastern Illinois with first pitch set for 4 p.m. at Price Field.
