- The Indiana State baseball team bounced back on Sunday, shutting out the
University of Evansville Purple Aces 6-0 to win their first Missouri Valley
Conference series in Evansville since 1998.
Indiana State (19-5, 2-1 MVC) plated their first run of the day in the second inning when sophomore Tyler Wampler singled to center with two outs to score junior Jeremy Lucas from second base.
Junior starting pitcher Ryan Torgerson (4-0) shut out the Purple Aces through six innings, allowing just two hits in the first four innings before working out of jams in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Torgerson induced a double play with runners on the corners before forcing a groundout with the bases loaded in the sixth.
ISU scored more than one run in an inning for the first time in the series in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of an Evansville error to score two runs in the frame. Junior Robby Ort singled through the right side of the infield with one out before moving to second when Lucas drew a walk. Senior Kyle Burnam drove in ISU's second run of the game with a single into shallow right-center field when he came up next. With two down in the inning, senior Ryan Walterhouse hit a ground ball to Eric Stamets at short that Stamets could not get a clean handle on as his throw to first base sailed over a leaping Jason Hockemeyer, allowing Lucas to score from second.
The Sycamores doubled their lead to 6-0 in the seventh inning, as redshirt junior Koby Kraemer scored on a wild pitch before Ort and Lucas tallied RBIs.
Evansville (15-9, 1-2 MVC) rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as the Purple Aces loaded the bases with no outs off of freshman Kyle Rupe. Senior southpaw Reggie Hochstedler came into the jam from the ISU bullpen and recorded the next three outs to keep UE off the scoreboard.
Ort and Burnam each tallied a pair of hits on Sunday, with Ort, Burnam, Lucas and Wampler all driving in a single run. Ort and Lucas also scored two runs each in the series finale.
Torgerson went six innings on Sunday, scattering six hits with striking out four batters. Rupe, Hochstedler and senior Chris Machado combined for the final three innings out of the ISU bullpen, allowing three hits while striking out three.
Indiana State, winners of 19 of their last 21 games, plays a pair of midweek games next week. ISU takes on Illinois-Springfield at 6:00 p.m. from Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium on Tuesday before travelling to Ball State at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Sycamores play their first home MVC series next weekend, taking on Illinois State on Friday, March 30, through Sunday, April 1.
