HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State baseball team made it
six wins in a row on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of visiting
Tennessee Martin with a 15-4 victory on Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium.
The Sycamores move to 11-4 on the season while the Skyhawks fall to 3-13.
It did not take long for ISU to get on the board on Sunday, as junior Jeremy Lucas smashed a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Indiana State the early edge. Redshirt junior Koby Kraemer (single) and junior Robby Ort (walk) reached base in front of Lucas, who now has four home runs this season.
UT Martin cut the ISU lead to 3-2 in the third inning, tallying five hits in the inning off ISU starter Ryan Torgerson. Senior Chase Okey drove in both runs with a double down the right field line, but was cut down trying to reach third on relay throw from Ort to senior Jeff Miera to Kraemer to slow the rally.
Indiana State came back with three runs in the bottom half of the third, using a single up the middle by Ort to score freshman Landon Curry and a two-run double by senior Kyle Burnam to plate Ort and Lucas to go in front 6-2.
The Sycamores put the game away in the fourth inning, bringing 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to move ahead 12-2. ISU took advantage of an error in the inning to score five of their runs with two outs, as Ort, Lucas, senior Jon Hedges, Burnam and senior Ryan Walterhouse drove in runs on five consecutive at-bats.
ISU put runs on the board for the final time in fifth, as Kraemer drove in two with a double into the left-center field gap before Lucas singled up the middle.
Torgerson (3-0) earned the victory on the mound, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits in 5.2 innings with four strikeouts. Seniors Brandon Dorsett and Chris Machado and juniors Tyler Fehringer and Devin Moore closed out the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit to the Skyhawks.
Lucas led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run, five RBIs and two runs scored. Hedges and Miera also picked up three hits and the plate, with Hedges driving in three runs. Curry, Kraemer and Ort all scored three runs on the afternoon.
Indiana State has now won 11 of their last 12 games, scoring an average of 10 runs per game and hitting .369 (172-for-466) as a team during that span.
The Sycamores close out their six-game homestand on Tuesday, when ISU welcomes SIU Edwardsville (8-7) to Terre Haute. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Bob Warn Field.
