TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Freshman pitcher Kyle Rupe led the Indiana State baseball team to a 10-0 victory on Tuesday in their opening game at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium, striking out 10 batters over seven innings on the mound.

With the win, Indiana State improves to 7-4 on the season while Eastern Illinois falls to 4-6.

The Sycamores struck first in the second inning on Tuesday, scoring two runs in the frame. Senior Kyle Burnam led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield, moving to third on a double off the left-center field wall by senior Ryan Walterhouse. Sophomore Tyler Wampler brought both runners home when he came up next, singling through the middle of the infield for the 2-0 ISU lead.

ISU added three runs to their lead in the third inning, getting a two-run double just inside the first base bag by Burnam before Wampler hit a sacrifice fly to left.

Indiana State went up 7-0 in the third, scoring a pair of unearned runs. The team's final runs came on an RBI single by Burnam in the sixth, a one-run triple by senior Jon Hedges in the eighth and a sharp RBI single to short by Burnam in the eighth.

Rupe (2-0) successfully worked around trouble in six of his seven innings on the mound, only going 1-2-3 through the EIU batting order in the second inning. The freshman from Indianapolis, Ind., struck out a career-high 10 batters, throwing 75 of his 106 pitches for strikes and retiring the leadoff batter in five of his seven innings.

Senior Reggie Hochstedler and redshirt junior Tyler Fehringer closed out the game for ISU, each tossing a scoreless inning in relief.

Burnam and Wampler led the ISU offense that pounded out 17 hits, as Burnam went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Wampler hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
