TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The visiting Creighton Bluejays completed the weekend sweep of the Indiana State baseball team on Sunday, coming out with a 6-5 victory thanks to a ninth-inning solo home run from junior Nick Judkins.
The loss extends ISU's losing streak to five games in a row, moving their overall record to 19-15 on the season and 2-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The win improves CU to 26-7 overall, 5-1 in league play.
Indiana State took their first lead of the weekend in the first inning on Sunday, using a two-out rally to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Robby Ort started the rally with a single to right-center field, crossing the plate when fellow sophomore Jeremy Lucas doubled over the leftfielder's head.
Creighton knotted the game back at 1-1 in the fourth inning on one swing of the bat, as senior Trever Adams tallied his MVC-leading 10th home run of the season with a shot to left-center field.
The Bluejays extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of four walks and one batter being hit by a pitch by three ISU pitchers. The Sycamores responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of frame, cutting the CU lead to one run, at 4-3. Sophomore Koby Kraemer led off the inning with a double to left field, scoring when Ort came to the plate next and tripled to right-center field. Ort crossed the plate when Lucas grounded out to second base during the next at-bat of the inning.
Both sides scored again in the eighth, with Creighton taking a 5-3 lead on a solo home run by freshman Mike Gerber. Ort tied up the ballgame in the bottom half of the inning, hitting a two-run home run to right field, his team-leading seventh long ball of the season. Junior Lucas Hileman led off the inning with a double to center to start the Sycamore rally.
Creighton put the winning run on the board in the ninth, as Judkins sent a 1-1 pitch from senior Blake Drake over the right field wall for the late lead.
Freshman Sean Manaea started the game for ISU, allowing four runs on six hits over 5.2 innings with three strikeouts and five walks on 109 pitches. Drake (1-4) took the loss by allowing two runs on two hits over 2.2 innings in relief.
Ort led ISU at the plate on Sunday, falling a double short of the cycle with a 3-for-4 afternoon with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Lucas and freshman Tyler Wampler both went 2-for-4 as well.
The Sycamores hit the road for their next four games, traveling to SIU Edwardsville for a midweek matchup at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, before going on the road for the first time in MVC play with a weekend series in Springfield, Mo., against the Missouri State Bears.
