OMAHA, Neb. - A great pitching performance from junior Jacob Petricka and six seventh inning runs carried the Indiana State University baseball team to an 8-5 victory on Friday night over the host Creighton University Bluejays at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., in front of 1,676 fans.
The Sycamores got on the board quickly on Friday night, as senior Ryan Strausborger hit the first pitch that he saw from Creighton starter Jonas Dufek to left field for a leadoff double. Sophomore Kyle Burnam would move Strausborger to third with a fly out to center before senior Tyler Graham brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
That would be the only scoring of the game until the seventh inning, as both Petricka and Dufek would settle in and both toss excellent outings on the mound.
Creighton cut the Sycamore lead to 2-1 with a single run of their own in the seventh, but ISU tallied six runs in the top of the eighth to expand their lead to 8-1.
With one-out, senior Ben Ferrell singled to left field before moving to second base on a wild pitch. Ferrell would cross the plate when Strausborger hit his seventh triple of the season down the right field line. Burnam followed Strausborger to plate, bringing the senior outfielder home on a successful squeeze bunt. The Sycamores would do the rest of their work with two outs, as ISU loaded the bases when Graham was hit by a pitch and senior Luke Fieser drew a walk. Ort notched an RBI with a single to right field, before Grgurich would clear the bases with a three-RBI triple to right to make the score 8-1.
The Bluejays tallied three runs of their own in the eighth on a three-run home run by CU first baseman Ian Dike and a single run in the ninth off of ISU closer Tyler Browning.
Jacob Petricka (4-4) picked up the victory on Friday, tossing seven excellent innings on the mound and allowing just three hits. The junior righty allowed just one run while striking out five batters and walking just one.
With the win, the Sycamores improve to 16-7 on the season and move to an even 2-2 in conference play. The Bluejays fall to 12-7 overall and also an even 2-2 in the MVC.
The Sycamores and Bluejays will play the second game of their series at the same time and the same place on Saturday, 7:00 p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadium. The game can be heard live on 92.7 FM The Crock with ISU sending south paw Joe Rodriguez (2-1, 5.13 ERA) to mound to face Brandon Koenigstein (3-0, 2.56 ERA).
