BLOOMINGTON,
Ind.
- The Indiana Hoosiers gave the Indiana State baseball team their fifth one-run
loss of the season and fourth in walk-off fashion, as the Hoosiers picked up a
8-7 come-from-behind victory at Sembower Field on Wednesday.
The Hoosiers (15-18) struck first, getting two runs off freshman Kyle Rupe in
the first inning. Rupe allowed a pair of walks with out in the inning, before
Michael Basil cleared the bases with a two-run triple into the right-center
field gap to put the Hoosiers up 2-0.
The Sycamores (26-8) took the lead in the following inning, scoring three runs
to go up 3-2. ISU loaded the bases with one out in the frame, using walks by
redshirt junior Koby Kraemer and senior Patrick Foster and a bunt single down
the third base line by senior Jeff Miera to put three runners on. ISU's first
runs of the inning came home when senior Lucas Hileman's bunt down the third
base line was thrown over the IU catcher and to the backstop, allowing Kraemer
and Foster to score. The Sycamores took the lead on the next pitch, when senior
Kyle Burnam singled to center to plate Miera from third.
Indiana State tacked on two more runs in the third inning when sophomore Tyler
Wampler lined a double down the right field line, scoring senior Jon Hedges and
Kraemer. ISU made it 6-2 in the fourth inning when Burnam picked up a single to
center to score Hileman, who had reached base with a single before hustling all
the way to third on a passed ball.
Indiana stormed back in front with five runs on five hits in the sixth inning,
as Indiana State used four pitchers in the inning. Will Nolden and Sam Travis
both picked up two RBIs in inning as the Hoosiers went up 7-6 heading to the
seventh.
The Sycamores got a leadoff single from Miera in the eighth and advanced him to
second on a sacrifice bunt by Hileman, but Burnam and Lucas popped up with
Miera in scoring position to end the rally in the eighth inning.
ISU tied it in the top of the ninth inning, starting their rally with a single
through the left side of the infield by Hedges. Junior Jordan Pearson came on
to pinch-run for ISU, moving all the way to third with one out on a wild pitch.
Kraemer drove in the game-tying run with a double just inside the third base
bag, before Indiana was able to retire two out of three to end the inning.
IU walked off in the ninth as pinch-run Micah Johnson scored on a squeeze bunt
down the third base line with one out.
Rupe settled in after a rough start, tossing five innings while allowing three
hits and two runs with two strikeouts. Junior Devin Moore (2-3) took the loss
for ISU in the ninth.
Miera led ISU with three hits, while Burnam and Wampler each drove in two runs.
Indiana State closes out their eight-game road swing this weekend, traveling to
Peoria, Ill., for the three-game set for the Bradley Braves.
