ST. LOUIS, MO. – Indiana State freshman Anna Morgina has been named the Missouri Valley Conference women’s tennis Athlete of the Week, it was announced today by the league office.
Morgina closed out her first spring season with the Sycamores with a 6-0 record last week. The Sycamore freshman capped her first Missouri Valley Conference campaign with wins over Evansville’s Ashton Schwerin (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) and Southern Illinois’ Vishakha Sheoran (6-1, 6-3).
She closed out the regular season with a dramatic 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win over Minnesota’s Tijana Koprivica in a match where Morgina was down 8-4 in the tie-breaker and rallied to score the final six points for the win.
The freshman won her last five matches and nine of her last 10 to finish the regular season at 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Morgina was 13-1 at No. 2 singles during the regular season and 3-2 at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Morgina and junior Sofya Lifanova closed out the regular season with an 8-4 win over Evansville’s Ashton Schwerin and Pin Sorensen, and 8-4 triumph over Southern Illinois’ Vishakha Sheoran and Martina Vianna Ce, and an 8-3 victory over Minnesota’s Alex Seaton and Magdalena Wiecha.
The Sycamore duo won their last seven matches and nine of their last 10 in completing the regular season with a 13-5 record overall and a 7-1 mark in the MVC. The duo was 13-3 at No. 2 doubles while playing twice at No. 1 doubles, losing both.
Indiana State is busy preparing for the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships, which will be played in Omaha, Neb., starting Friday.
