TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State University Track and Field teams will compete under the lights this weekend, as they will head to the Illinois Twilight meet for the first time. The University of Illinois will host the meet.
“This should be great competition,” said Men’s Track and Field Coach John McNichols. “These are two Big Ten coaches that I have known a long time and I appreciate the work that they do. So we have the opportunity to race two respected Big Ten programs and also our conference rival Loyola. I think there will be great events from the steeplechase down.”
The Sycamores will compete against conference rivals, Loyola and Bradley. They will also see out of conference competition from IUPUI, Eastern Illinois, as well as Illinois and Iowa of the Big Ten Conference.
“I think this should be a really great meet,” said Women’s Head Track and Field Coach Angela Martin. “I think Illinois has some great teams, including our conference rival Loyola. I think it would be really great to go in and challenge ourselves and try to beat some Big Ten teams.”
The meet will kick off at 1:00 p.m. (ET) with the women’s hammer throw and men’s javelin throw. The meet will then progress to the evening track evens, which will be kicked off with the 3000 meter steeplechase at 6:00 p.m. (ET) and will conclude with the 5,000 meter run at the end of the night.
“It looks like the forecast is going to be good this weekend,” said McNichols. “We’re ready for that and many of our guys just need a good weather meet. They have been competing very well, but many of them have been in very tough conditions. I think this weekend we can be very optimistic that we will have great competition and weather.”
The Sycamores will look to position themselves well as they prepare for several big invites in the coming weeks to move their way up the East Region rankings. The top 48 in each event will advance to the NCAA East Preliminary round for a chance at Nationals.
Currently the Sycamores have nine athletes with marks in the top 48, including:
Greggmar Swift (110 Meter Hurdles-3rd), Katie Wise (100 Meter Dash-3rd), Mary Theisen (Shot Put-5th, Discus-12th, Hammer Throw- 38th), Kimyanna Rudolph (Pole Vault-7th), Carmelia Stewart (Triple Jump-8th), Katelyn Rutz (Discus-21st), Adarius Washington (110 Meter Hurdles-33rd), Chris Fields (Shot Put-43rd), and John Mascari (5,000 Meter Run-44th).
