Katie Wise, a sophomore for the Sycamore women’s track and field team and Landon Curry, a junior outfielder on the Sycamore baseball team, have been named the Sycamore Scholar-Athletes of the Month, sponsored by State Farm Agent Sandy Bryant, for the month of February.

Created in September 2012, the Sycamore Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award, sponsored by State Farm Agent Sandy Bryant, will be presented each month to a male and female student-athlete who has excelled in academics, athletics and leadership.  The program is designed to recognize Sycamore student-athletes for being positive role models for Indiana State University and to motivate and encourage excellence.

Sophomore Katie Wise was named Indiana State Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Month for the month of February. Wise not only excelled on the track with conference championships in the 60 and 200 meter dashes, Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, and a performance worthy of a trip to the NCAA National Championships in the 60 meter dash, but she also excelled in the classroom with a 3.55 grade point average in Pre-Elementary Education.

Wise will head to her first NCAA Indoor Championship in two weeks after running a personal best time of 7.30 seconds to win the 60 meter dash at this past weekend’s Missouri Valley Conference Championships. Her time ranks her second in school history only behind seven-time national champion, Holli Hyche.

Through their first 10 games of the 2014 season, Curry has been a large part of the Sycamore baseball team's success and 9-1 record. Curry is batting .326, starting all 10 games. He also has a team high 12 runs scored and five stolen bases. Curry has added 15 hits, one double, five RBI's and a .436 on base percentage and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in his junior campaign.

Student-athletes are nominated based on the following criteria:

Academic Excellence.  To be eligible for nomination, the student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

Athletic Excellence.  The student-athlete has competed to the best of his/her ability throughout the month and exemplified great effort and tenacity during practice and competition.

Involvement.  The student-athlete must show leadership in and out of competition, participate in community service and applicable SAAC and life skills programming as well as show Sycamore spirit by supporting other teams and sporting events.
