Among The MVC

ISU is just one of two teams (Wichita State) left undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record as we enter week three of league play. The Sycamores are at the top of many Missouri Valley Conference statistics as they lead in rebounding margin (+2.1), second in steals (10.0) and turnover margin (+2.0) in 2013-14. In addition, they’re ranked second in scoring defense (63.2), third in scoring margin (0.0), second in defensive rebounding (36.4), fourth in offensive rebounding (38.5) and seventh in scoring (63.2).

Individually, Anna Munn, leads in free throw percentage (.925), ranks eight in scoring (14.0), second in three pointers made 31, 2.4 per game) and 10th  in steals (1.5). Racheal Mahan and Marina Laramie rank seventh and tied for eighth respectively, in rebounds (7.3, 7.0), Mahan ranks fifth in field goal percentage (46-for-92, .500) and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir is sixth in assists (54, 3.9 apg.), 10th in scoring (13.5) and third in steals (30, 2.1). Natasha Zurek is fourth in steals per game (28, 2.0).

Last Time Out

Indiana State defeated Evansville, 67-46, on Thursday evening

Southern Illinois lost to Illinois State, 76-59, on Friday evening

ISU Rolls Past Evansville

Senior guard Anna Munn made a triumphant return to the Indiana State lineup as she helped guide the Sycamores to a 67-46 win over Evansville Thursday evening. Munn led Indiana State with 20 points, including 14 in the first half as ISU remained a perfect 4-0 in Missouri Valley Conference and 9-6 overall. Munn, who was sidelined due to a shoulder injury against Illinois State on Sunday, went 7-for-14 from the field including a 4-for-7 performance from three-point range. It also marks her 11th game of the season in double figures. The senior from Indianapolis, Ind. also grabbed five rebounds and tied for a team-high four assists. Marina Laramie added 19 points and six rebounds while Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir chipped in 13 points and four assists. It marked the second-straight time the Sycamores defense has held the Purple Aces to less than 50 points. ISU held UE to 48 points in last year’s 55-48 win at the Ford Center on Feb. 14.

Wittman In the Lineup

Junior guard Stephanie Wittman made her first career start for Indiana State on Sunday versus Illinois State while also earning a nod against Evansville on Thursday. The transfer from Kansas State is currently averaging 6.5 points per game and 3.3 rebounds since becoming eligible against ETSU on Dec. 18. On the season, ISU has used five different starting lineups.

Mahan Making Moves

Junior forward Racheal Mahan is making the most of her junior season, leading the Sycamores in rebounding with 7.3 per game along with a fourth-best 8.8 points per game. An honorable mention All-MVC selection last season, Mahan leads ISU in field goal percentage (.500) which also ranks fifth in the MVC.  She’s led the Sycamores on the glass in seven games of the 2013-14 season.

Can They Match It?

With the 4-0 start, the MVC preseason favorite Sycamores have started conference play  on a four-game win streak for the second time in four years  under head coach Teri Moren’s reign. The best start in Valley play came during the 2005-06 season, when ISU won a regular-season championship as they won their first 12 contests in league play.

Seniors Lead The Way

Senior guards Anna Munn and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir have paved the way for the Sycamores this season on the offensive end. The duo has combined to lead ISU in 14 of 15 games this season. Abdul-Qaadir posted back-to-back 20 point performances that led ISU to a sweep in the opening weekend of MVC play and has led in scoring the three of the last four games. Munn has led the team in scoring in seven contest this season and has in double-figures in 13 of 15 games including a season-high 24 points against nationally-ranked LSU.

Up Next

ISU returns to the Hulman Center to host Missouri State (Jan. 25) and Wichita State (Jan. 27). Saturday’s game versus the Bears will be seen on ESPN3 while it could be a battle of the league’s top two teams on Monday versus the Shockers.
