It would have been easy to indulge on chocolates and enjoy flowers and cards, but instead, Indiana State University student-athletes committed to serving others this Valentine’s Day. The Sycamore Student-Athlete Advisory Committee organized Sycamore Parents Night Out in which for a minimal cost, faculty, staff and the community were able to drop off their children to spend a safe, fun-filled evening with the student-athletes while their parents had a night to themselves!
The event, which was made possible by a grant from Indiana State’s Center for Community Engagement, was held in the Athletic Annex, which serves as Indiana State’s softball and baseball indoor practice facility. The complex was transformed into a vibrant Valentine paradise for the children to enjoy with plenty of color, balloons and pizazz. The children participated in activities such as mini-skill clinics, crafts and story time, and perhaps, most importantly, they ound and play with their favorite Sycamore student-athletes! ar
Mini-clinics were conducted by members of the women’s soccer, track and field, football, basketball and volleyball teams. Cheer and dance brought face paint and tattoos while the cross country team supplied bean bags and story time. During crafts time, the children had an opportunity to showcase their own creativity and create a Valentine person to either keep or gift to a friend or family member. The evening concluded with freshly popped popcorn, granola bars and our feature film, an all-time favorite, Warner Brothers Space Jam.
Indiana State athletics and the Terre Haute community had a great time! But the best part is that the event was also for a very good cause. The proceeds raised from Sycamore Parents Night Out were donated in full to March of Dimes to support continued research and lifesaving programs to help babies and their families as March of Dimes celebrates their 75th year anniversary. As parents returned to retrieve their little ones, they were given a brochure promoting the upcoming Wabash Valley Division March for Babies to be held at our very own, Indiana State University Memorial Stadium Saturday, April 27th.
SAAC received multiple notes of gratitude for their efforts. One note from a Sycamore staff parent read: “I just wanted to send you a thank you and let you know how much fun my boys had last night. You all did a wonderful job!” Another note read, “The kids couldn’t talk fast enough about all the fun they had last night! You guys did great! Props to your SAAC crew who made sure the kids were happy, healthy and had fun!”
SAAC looks forward to making Sycamore Parents Night Out an annual event in the future!
