INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana State posted a pair of double-digit runs -- one in the first half and then another in the second -- to secure a 75-61 road victory over IUPUI in front of 1,215 fans inside of The Jungle.
The Sycamores improved to 5-3 on the season while IUPUI fell to 4-9. It marked the Sycamores' first victory in Indianapolis over the Jaguars in three attempts.
Indiana State was led in scoring by Manny Arop and Jake Odum who scored 18 points each. Arop added nine rebounds while Odum had three assists. RJ Mahurin earned his first start of the season and scored 12 points while Khristian Smith poured in 10 off the bench.
The Sycamores hit 29-of-58 shots from the field (50 percent), including a 52 percent mark in the second half. The Sycamores reached the 40 rebound mark for the first time this season and held a 40-25 advantage on the glass. Indiana State dominated the paint with a 36-18 scoring edge inside and led 6-0 on fast break points.
Indiana State led 36-30 at the half and scored each of the first six points after the break to stretch the lead out to 12 points just two minutes in.
The Sycamores and Jaguars battled in out over the next nine minutes until the Indiana State defense clamped down and held IUPUI scoreless from the nine minute mark until there was just four minutes remaining. In that timespan, the Sycamores had scored 12 unanswered points and held a game-high 18-point lead at 70-52 with 5:22 left in the contest on a field goal by Mahurin.
Dawon Cummings also reentered the Sycamore starting lineup and posted a career-high seven assists.
The Sycamores scored first on a RJ Mahurin lay-up on the first offensive possession of the contest for the quick 2-0 lead. IUPUI ran the advantage out to 5-2 before the Sycamores were able to rattle off the next 13 counters on a spurt that began with a Jake Odum jump shot with 17:59 left in the first half and was completed with another Odum lay-up at the 15:21 mark as the Sycamores owned the 15-5 advantage.
Indiana State's lead grew to 19-7 with a 3-pointer from Lucas Eitel at the 13:57 mark. IUPUI scored seven in a row until just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening stanza to cut the Sycamore lead down to 19-14 before Justin Gant was credited with a field goal after the Jaguars were whistled for goaltending to make it 21-14.
Khristian Smith came up with a steal with 7:02 remaining in the first half as the Sycamores held a three-point lead and the possession ended with an Odum lay-up to stretch the lead out to 23-18.
After a pair of IUPUI baskets trimmed the lead down to just one point, Arop hit jumper in the paint to run the Sycamore advantage back out to three and then he hit a trey in the corner at the 5:29 mark and Indiana State led 28-22.
Brandon Burnett scored his first career points with 4:37 on the clock to stretch the Indiana State lead out to 30-24. Khristian Smith powered home a dunk and then Arop hit a jumper with 1:13 remaining for stretch the lead out to 36-28.
The Sycamores were led in scoring at the half by Arop, who had 11 points while Odum poured in nine. ISU held a 21-13 edge in rebounding at the break and hit 16-of-33 shots from the field (48.5 percent).
IUPUI had three scorers in double figures, led by 19 off the bench by Jordan Shanklin.
