DES MOINES—Freshman Cassandra Willis recorded a career high 20 kills but the Indiana State volleyball team (3-23, 1-15 MVC) fell 3-1 Saturday on the road to the Bulldogs of Drake (5-22, 4-12 MVC).
Early in the first set, both teams traded points before the Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-7 lead. The Sycamores battled back to tie the set at 14-14 thanks to kills by senior Christie Fullenkamp, junior Molly Murphy, freshman Victoria Swigart and an ace by junior Loni Mackinson. The Bulldogs responded, however, and went on to win the set 25-21.
The Bulldogs came out firing to start the second set and pulled out to a 10-1 lead over the Sycamores. Late in the set, the Bulldogs held a 19-10 lead before the Sycamores came storming back to cut the Bulldog lead to 23-21 off kills by Willis and Swigart. Once again, however, the Bulldogs held off the Sycamore rally to win the set 25-22.
It was the Sycamores who got off to a quick start in the third set as they took a 10-7 lead off kills by Willis and freshman Emily Barber. The Bulldogs came back to tie the match at 14 and 19 before the Sycamores prevailed, winning 25-20.
The Sycamores could not keep the momentum going in the fourth set and were never able to find an edge on the Bulldogs as they fell 25-13 in the set and 3-1 in the match.
Willis led the team with her career and match high 20 kills while freshman Ashlen buck led the team defensively with 17 digs. Mackinson also recorded 37 assists and 10 digs for the Sycamores.
The Sycamores will wrap up their 2012 season next weekend when they return home to face Evansville and Southern Illinois in the ISU Arena.
