SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Despite battling forcing five sets, the Indiana State volleyball team (3-13, 1-5 MVC) fell 3-2 on the road to the Bears of Missouri State (10-8, 5-2 MVC) Friday.
The Sycamores got off to a quick start as they won the first set 25-23 to take a 1-0 set lead in the match. Both teams traded points and late in the set the score was tied 18-18 before taking a 22-18 lead off four consecutive attack errors by the Bears. Junior Molly Murphy then put the Sycamores ahead one set to non with a kill.
The Bears came back in the second set to tie the match 1-1 with a 25-22 win.
Indiana State rebounded in the third set, however, as they earned a 25-22 set win to take a 2-1 set lead over the Bears. Both teams traded points before senior Christie Fullenkamp put the Sycamores ahead with a kill.
Once again, the Bears responded and took the fourth set 25-21 to tie the match at two sets a piece.
In the fifth set, the Bears jumped out to a 4-1 advantage over the Sycamores before kills by Murphy and senior Shea Doran cut the lead to 5-3. The Sycamores could not get an advantage, however, as they fell in the fifth set 15-13.
Fullenkamp led the Sycamores with 26 kills while Doran and Murphy also reached double figure kills for ISU. Doran had 21 kills and 16 digs while Murphy had 12 kills. Junor Loni Mackinson added 53 assists and 15 digs while freshman Ashlen Buck added 25 digs.
The Sycamores will return to action Saturday when they travel to face the Shockers of Wichita State at 8 p.m.
