LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course
The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course has just what a championship course should have ... a challenging setup of varying elevations, twists and turns, and a long straight-away. It also has something special for the spectator ... openness ... with unobstructed views of the entire course for the fan to follow the action from start to finish from anywhere at the venue. Indiana State University, in cooperation with Vigo County and the City of Terre Haute, are committed to making the championship experience special to the student-athelte, coaches, and staff of the competing schools, and to the fans in attendance. The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center was dedicated on October 17, 1997. The 240 acres of land for the development of the course and facility was donated by LaVern Gibson. Indiana State and Boston Celtic basketball great Larry Bird made a donation to the development of the facility in honor of his father, Joe Bird, and that donation was matched by Max and Greg Gibson in the name of their father and grandfather, respectively. The reclaimed coal mine now includes the cross country course and an indoor facility that houses two full size basketball courts, locker rooms, and a Senior Citizen center. The facility is located just east of the Hulman International Airport in eastern Vigo County.
