TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—Fans got their first look at the 2012 edition of the Indiana State volleyball team as they defeated the alumni squad 3-1 on Saturday in the ISU Arena.
"I thought we we had a lot of different lineups today, and a lot of our freshman got a lot of good playing time and really produced for us and our returners were good leaders for us," head coach Trai Dahl said. "However, we still have a lot to work on before our first match next Friday."
The Sycamores got off to a quick start against the alumni squad as they took a 4-3 lead in the first set and never looked back and went on to win the set 25-12.
The alumni squad would not go down without a fight, however, as they battled back in the second set and jumped out to a 22-11 lead over the current Sycamore team. The Sycamores regrouped and closed the gap to 21-24 before the alumni was able to score and win the second set.
In the third set, the Sycamores again took their first lead at 4-3 aand it was one they would not give up as they took a two-set-to-one lead over the alumni with a 25-21 win in the third set.
The Sycamores then put the the alumni away in a highly contested fourth set by a final score of 25-17.
"It was fun to play with everyone and to see the new freshman coming in," said former Sycamore and alumni squad member Kiya James. "It was also good to play with the other two [former] seniors"
The Sycamores will begin regular season play on Aug. 24 when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take part in the DePaul tournament.
