TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State baseball team took both games of a doubleheader with the Rockhurst Hawks on Thursday, winning both games by one run. ISU won game one by a 4-3 score and walked off on a single to center field by junior Jeff Miera for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
The wins push ISU's record to 14-10 on the season while RU moved to 9-10. The Sycamores have won eight of their last nine games overall, with all eight coming on Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium.
In game one, the Sycamores score a pair of runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Lucas Hileman doubled into the left-center field gap to start the first before moving to third on a bunt single by sophomore Koby Kraemer down the first base line. Sophomore Robby Ort picked up an RBI when he came up next, reaching base on a fielder's choice to plate Hileman. Ort went to third when junior Jon Hedges doubled to left-center and scored on a groundout by junior Kyle Burnam.
Indiana State and Rockhurst both plated runs in the third inning, with RU's Ben Baker knocking a two-out single to center field only to have Kraemer score in the bottom of the inning when Burnam grounded into a base-loaded double play.
The Sycamores and Hawks matched runs again in the fifth inning, as RU's Sean Carter pinch hit and drove in a run with a single to right only to see Hedges drive in Ort from third with two outs in the bottom of the frame with the single through the left side of the infield. Ort reached third with a triple into the right-center field gap with two outs.
Rockhurst scored the game's final run in the sixth inning, but junior Reggie Hochstedler (1-0) shut the door to earn the victory in game one. Senior Jason Van Skike started and lasted into the fifth inning, allowing two runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Hochstedler pitched the final three innings to earn the win.
Pitching dominated the nightcap of the doubleheader, as ISU and RU combined for just 10 hits. Rockhurst scored their run in the top of the first inning, tallying three singles of senior Blake Drake.
Drake would settle in after that, allowing just one more hit, an infield single in the second inning, but not much else over his 6.2 innings on the mound. The combination of Drake, junior Brandon Flora and junior Chris Machado allowed just three base runners (all reaching after being hit by a pitch) over ISU's final six innings in the field.
Indiana State tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth inning, as Hileman, Kraemer and Ort loaded the bases to start the inning. Burnam tied the score with one down in the frame with a single to shallow left field.
The Sycamores walked off two innings later in the bottom of the eighth, as Miera, a late-game substitution, knocked a bases-loaded single into center field for a 2-1 Indiana State win.
Machado (1-1) picked up the win by tossing a perfect top of the eighth inning.
Hedges and Kraemer led ISU with three hits each during the doubleheader, while Burnam topped the team with a pair of RBIs.
ISU will look for the series sweep on Friday when they take the field at 1:00 p.m., with junior Colin Rea (4-1, 3.98 ERA) taking the mound for the Sycamores.
