ST. LOUIS – Senior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week, announced by the league Tuesday.
The Springfield, Mass. native posted back-to-back double-digit games as ISU swept Evansville and Southern Illinois on the road this weekend to improve to 5-0 in Valley action. This week’s honor marks her third MVC weekly honor with two newcomer and one player nod.
Against Evansville, Abdul-Qaadir posted 13 points, four rebounds and tied a team-high four assists in 30 minutes of action. On the evening, she went 4-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line as ISU cruised to its largest win of the year, 67-46, over the Purple Aces.
Against the Salukis, Abdul-Qaadir led with a team-high 15 points, two rebounds and two steals in the 63-44 win Sunday afternoon. On the week, Abdul-Qaadir went 11-for-290 (.423) from the field, grabbed six rebounds and totaled 28 points.
On the season, Abdul-Qaadir, a transfer from Memphis, is the Sycamores’ second leading scorer with 13.6 points per game and leads the team in assists (58) and steals (33).
Indiana State is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Missouri State. Tipoff is set for 2:05 p.m. and will be shown live on ESPN3.
