TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? The Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, is the last chance for members of the Indiana State Track & Field team to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships or to improve their performances for those that have already provisionally qualified. Action will take place Friday and Saturday at the Loftus Sports Center on the Notre Dame Campus.
“We will be taking eight men and five women to the meet this weekend,” John McNichols, Indiana State men's track and field coach, said. “Some of them need to better their marks to have a chance to advance to the NCAA's and some are just outside of provisional marks and could surpass them with good performances this weekend.”
Most of the Sycamores concluded their indoor seasons at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships last weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Sycamore men's team placed second overall while the women's team finished in fourth. Both were picked second in the pre-championship poll of league coaches.
“Scoring in the MVC is an accomplishment,” McNichols said. “We had 25 of our 32 man roster score, which is very good. We always seem to be the team that can upset the favorite but we just haven't been able to get it done. I am hopeful that this will change because we have people on this team that can get it done.”
John Gartland, Indiana State women's coach, said that his team could have folded after their poor performance on the first day of the MVC Championships.
“Instead, we came back as a team and pulled ourselves into the top half of the conference where we belong,” Gartland said. “We had great leadership by our captains who took it upon themselves to meet with the team and emotionally talk to them about the importance of coming back.”
Indiana State junior Kylie Hutson is the only automatic qualifier for the Sycamores and will be competing in her third straight NCAA Indoor Championships in women's pole vault.
Several other members of the team have surpassed provisional qualifying marks but only the top 14 are guaranteed a spot at the NCAA's.
On the women's team, junior Erica Moore is ranked 12th nationally in the indoor pentathlon with 4,030 points. She also provisionally qualified for the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.14, which ranks 17th in the nation.
Sophomore Kelsey Hanley has the 11th best distance in the women's weight throw at 64-feet-8.5-inches (19.72 meters) and junior Lauren Martin has the 13th best distance in the women's triple jump at 43-feet-1-inch (13.13 meters).
On the men's side, freshman Brandon Pounds has the 32nd best throw in the shot put with a heave of 58-feet-7.25-inches (17.76 meters) and sophomore Major Clay has the 27th best in the high jump with a leap of 7-feet-0.5-inches (2.15 meters).
Several other members of both teams will be in competition this weekend as they seek to post their best times and distances of the season in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA's.
