TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State baseball team earned a 4-3 victory against the Chippewas of Central Michigan on Thursday evening at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium. The game was the first of the Indiana State Tournament which will feature games with Rutgers, Canisius and Central Michigan. ISU improves to 5-7, while the Chippewas fall to 11-6.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Sycamores scored the first two runs of the game. Landon Curry started the game off with a single and scored on a single from Derek Hannahs. Andy Young drove Hannahs home on a bloop single to left field and put the Sycamores up 2-0 after one inning.
Central Michigan got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Logan Regnier reached on a walk and was driven in by the designated hitter Cody Leichman to cut the Sycamore to 2-1.
The Chippewas took the lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Regnier started the inning off with a walk and Pat MacKenzie followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Zack Fields drove Nick Regnier home with a sacrifice fly, and MacKenzie scored on a bunt single by Logan Regnier. After five innings of play, the Chippewas led 3-1.
The Sycamores regained the lead in the sixth inning, when Hannahs scorched a single to left that was misplayed by the left fielder allowing Tyler Friis to score from first, while Hannahs reached third base on the play. With the infield in, Jacob Hayes hit a sharp grounder that was misplayed by the second baseman allowing Hannahs to score and the Sycamores to take the lead at 4-3.
On the mound, David Stagg started the game, going 4.0 innings, and facing one batter in the fifth. Stagg allowed just one hit, but gave up two earned runs, walked seven and struck out three. Michael Eberle (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching in 1.2 innings walking one and hitting one for the two batters to reach base against him.
Ryan Keaffaber earned his second save of the season, tossing 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out three Chippewas.
At the plate, Curry and Hannahs did the bulk of the damage. Both finished two-for-four, Curry scored one run, while Hannahs scored two and added an RBI. Hayes and Young added RBI for the Sycamores, while Kaden Moore pitched in with a two-for-three performance.
