HAUTE, Ind. - Freshman Marina Laramie scored a
career-high 27 points on Friday night against Missouri State, leading the
Indiana State women's basketball team to a 71-63 come-from-behind Missouri
Valley Conference victory inside Hulman Center.
With their win on Friday, Indiana State (17-9, 9-6 MVC) swept the season series
with Missouri State (14-14, 6-10 MVC) for the first time since the 2007-08
season. The Sycamores had entered the 2012-13 season on a nine-game losing streak
to the Bears.
Laramie dominated the game after the half, totaling 21 of her career-high 27
points after the break. Laramie's 27 points are the most for an Indiana State
freshman since Bianca Jarrett posted 32 points on the road at Southern Illinois
on Feb. 21, 2009.
Missouri State and Indiana State went back-and-forth in the first half, as the
lead changed hands 11 times and sat even on four other occasions in the opening
20 minutes. ISU held a 26-25 lead with 3:07 remaining until the break following
a jumper by junior Anna Munn, but MSU closed the half on a 6-2 run to take a
31-28 lead into the locker room.
Sophomore Racheal Mahan led Indiana State with seven points and four rebounds
at the half, as Mahan and Laramie combined to shoot just 6-for-19 from the
field.
Missouri State kept their surge going in the second half, scoring 12 of the game's
first 16 points of the second half, capping their 12-4 run for a 43-32 lead on
a layup by Christiana Shorter with 16:26 to go.
Indiana State fed the ball inside Laramie and got stops on the defensive end
over the next 10 minutes of action, as the Sycamores turned a 44-34 deficit
with 15:43 to play into a 53-48 lead with 6:26 remaining following a 19-4 run.
Laramie scored 11 points for Indiana State during the run, including nine
straight at one point.
The Sycamores answered each push by the Bears, as Missouri State closed to
within two points on five different occasions, but could never tie the score or
regain the lead as Indiana State earned a 71-63 victory.
Laramie finished the game 10-for-21 from the field and 7-for-10 from the
free-throw line, totaling 27 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
Senior Taylor Whitley added 16 points and five assists while Mahan went for 11
points and seven rebounds. Karly Buer led Missouri State with 11 points.
Indiana State rallied for a double-digit deficit on Friday, something the
Sycamores have done in each of their last three wins in MVC play. ISU trailed
by 13 points at Evansville, 15 points and Southern Illinois and 11 points on
Friday against MSU before coming back to claim a victory in each game.
The Sycamores close out their regular season home games on Sunday against
Wichita State, a game that will be televised on the MVC-TV Network regionally
around the Midwest. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. between the Sycamores and
Shockers with Senior Day festivities for Whitley and redshirt junior Andrea
Rademacher following the contest.
