SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Senior Felisha
Johnson, junior Greggmar Swift, and former Sycamore great Kylie Hutson were the
stars of the day for Indiana State as the second day of the Meyo Invitational,
hosted by the University of Notre Dame, came to an end.
“We
had some good moments,” Angela Martin, Indiana State women's track & field
coach, said. “Fe was steady like usual while Leeann (Michl) had some great
competition and got out faster than she normally does. Carmelia (Stewart) had a
nice PR in the triple jump. We pressed a little bit in some events but we keep
making progress towards our team goals.”
Johnson
established her second meet record of the weekend as she won the women's shot
put with a heave of 55-feet-9.25-inches (17.00 meters). The Sycamore senior
also set the meet record in the weight throw on Friday with a winning distance
of 68-feet-3.25-inches (20.81 meters).
Swift
won his 12th straight race in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a winning time of
7.79 seconds in the finals Saturday. Purdue's Brandon Winters was second (7.95).
The Sycamore junior tied his career best with a 7.72 finish in the semifinals
which was the top time heading into the finals. Swift also had the top time in the
preliminaries of 7.86.
Hutson
is a former All-American for Indiana State who now competes for Nike while also
being a volunteer assistant coach for the Sycamores. She has had a busy weekend
as she was inducted into the Indiana Track & Field Hall of Fame Friday
night and then travelled to South Bend to compete in the pole vault
invitational.
The
former Sycamore broke the Meyo Invitational record and the Loftus Sports
Center/Meyo Field record when she cleared 15-feet-1-inch (4.60 meters) to win
the pole vault invitational. The height currently ranks second in the United
States and fourth in the World rankings. Sycamore senior Richelle Kimble placed
sixth in the event by clearing 12-feet-3.5-inches (3.75 meters).
Senior
Leeann Michl came within a half second of her career best but still ran a
season best 2:08.87 in finishing fifth in the women's 800 meters. Junior Shelby
Higginbottom ran a career best 2:13.37 to finish 19th. Senior Stacia
Weatherford was 10th (24.83) and sophomore Demetria Camble 26th (25.39) in the
200 meters.
Sycamore
junior Jessica Zangmeister ran a career best 9:59.73 to finish ninth in the
women's 3,000 meters which is also the ninth fastest in Indiana State history.
Senior Hanna Mercer just missed a PR with a 10:25.79 finish and 33rd overall.
Sophomore
Carmelia Stewart soared to a career best in the triple jump with a distance of
39-feet-11.5-inches (12.18 meters) which placed her ninth overall. Senior
Shalesa Smith was 10th with a distance of 39-feet-8-inches (12.09 meters). Freshman
Whitney Walker placed 14th in the shot put with a heave of 43-feet-2.25-inches
(13.16 meters).
The
4x400 meter relay team of Macey Black, Stacia Weatherford, Shelby Higginbottom,
and Leeann Michl finished seventh overall with a time of 3:46.27.
Justin
Baxtron finished sixth in the men's 200 meters with a time of 21.89 while
junior Keith Housley was 27th (22.34) and sophomore Devin Price 44th (22.73),
both setting career bests with their runs. Junior Max Tuttle was 40th in the
400 meters (49.41) with sophomore Ryan Dickson 43rd (49.50) while freshman
Michael Steele (50th) finished with a personal best 1:56.80 in the 800 meters.
Corey
Hahn ran a career best 4:15.85 in the mile to finish 32nd overall while Tristan
Selby ran a career best 8:35.41 to finish 21st in the men's 3,000 meters. The
4x400 meter relay team of Arqeil Shaw, Max Tuttle, Ryan Dickson, and Brian
Martin ran a season best 3:15.68 in placing 16th overall.
Junior
Robert Webb had a jump of 46-feet-11-inches (14.30 meters) to place 11th in the
triple jump. Freshman Derek Bunch led the Sycamore contingent in the shot put
with a heave of 52-feet-6-inches (16.00 meters) to place 14th. Junior Chris
Fields tied for 16th with a career best distance of 59-feet-9.25-inches (16.96
meters) while freshman Sean Dennis went 45-feet-8.5-inches (13.93 meters) to
place 26th.
In
a late result from Friday, Sophomore Arqeil Shaw ran the fifth fastest 500
meter time in school history as he finished in 1:05.40 which placed him 12th
overall. Senior Brian Martin ran 1:06.91 (22nd overall) and sophomore Ray
Skamay finished in 1:08.78 (31st overall).
