HAUTE, Ind. –
The Indiana State track & field teams will be competing at two venues this
weekend as a select number of athletes travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the
Jack Jennett Invite while the rest of the squad will be in Bloomington, Ind.,
for the Indiana Relays. Both events will be contested on Friday and Saturday.
Rachael
Johnson, Kelly Steffen, and Carmelia Stewart along with Robert Webb and Brett
Wehmiller will be at the University of Northern Iowa this weekend to compete in
the Pentathlon and Heptathlon at the Jack Jennett Invite. Indiana State's pole
vault crew of Richelle Kimble, Lauren Rice, Kimyanna Rudolph, Alyissa
Markiewicz, Hanna McKnight, Connor Curley, Drew LaMaster, and Wes Schenck along
with triple jumper Nikiga Pujate will also compete in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Johnson
and Steffen are veteran multi-event athletes who will be competing in the
Pentathlon for the first time this season while Stewart will be competing for
the first time in the event. The Pentathlon is a multi-event contest consisting
of the 60 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and 800 meters.
Webb
is a also veteran multi-event athlete while Wehmiller is competing in the
Heptathlon for the first time. The multi-event features the 60 meters, long
jump, shot put, high jump, 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000 meters
spread over two days of competition.
The
Pentathlon opens the competition at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Friday with the Heptathlon
starting at 4:30 p.m. (ET). Individual field events begin at noon (ET)
Saturday.
The
Indiana Relays will be held in Gladstein Fieldhouse on the campus of Indiana
University. Action will begin at 3 p.m. (ET) Friday with the field events and
the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles. Saturday's events start at 10 a.m.
(ET) with field events and the 200 meters.
Indiana
State's Felisha Johnson, who missed competing last weekend due to an illness,
is back this week and will compete in the Invitational Weight Throw and
Invitational Shot Put. Johnson currently leads the nation in the weight throw
and will go up against the fourth ranked thrower in Purdue's Dani Bunch. Three throwers in the top 20 of the shot put
will be battling it out led by Johnson who has the second best throw in the
nation. Bunch ranks 13th while Indiana's Kyla Buckley ranks 20th.
Chris
Fields will compete in the men's Invitational Weight Throw along with Sycamore
teammate Brandon Pounds. Fields currently ranks 25th in the weight throw with
Pounds 42nd. Three other throwers from the top 50 in the nation will be in competition
including Chukwuebuka Enekwechi of Purdue (10), Elias Hakansson of Alabama
(16), and Craig Robinson of Southeast Missouri State (32). Fields will also
compete in the Invitational Shot Put in a field that includes 10th ranked Jakob
Engel, 22nd ranked Enekwechi, and 29th ranked Coy Blair all of Purdue, and 36th
ranked Kevin Farley of Southeast Missouri State.
Three
other Sycamores will compete in Invitational events including Leeann Michl in the
Invitational 800 meters, Justin Baxtron in the Invitational 200 meters and John
Mascari in the Invitational 3000 meters. Michl currently ranks fifth nationally
in the 800 meters. Her heat in the Invitational 800 meters includes seventh
ranked Kimberley Ficenec of Alabama. Baxtron is currently 61st in the 200
meters and Mascari 56th in the 3000 meters.
