HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's soccer won
their home opener for the second straight season, netting one goal in each half
en route to a 2-0 shutout over the visiting SIU Edwardsville Cougars on Friday
night at Memorial Stadium.
Indiana State (1-0) took the lead in the 25th minute, as sophomore Marisa Windisch set up junior Shelby Troyer for a shot from 30 yards out in the middle
of the field. Troyer's shot dipped just under the crossbar above the
outstretched hands of Courtney Vonder Haar in goal for SIUE for the game's
opening goal.
SIU Edwardsville (0-1) nearly leveled the match two minutes later, but their
forward was called offside just prior to sending a shot to the back of the net.
The Sycamores took a one-goal lead into the locker room, outshooting the
Cougars by a 6-5 margin. The Cougars held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks at
the break.
SIU Edwardsville came out strong from halftime, working for four shots and
three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but could not
level the match.
Sophomore Aubrie Musselman was inches away from giving the Sycamores their
second goal of the game in the 61st minute, but her attempt from just outside
the penalty box hit the crossbar and went over the goal.
Two more offside calls limited the SIUE attack over the next 10 minutes, as a
pair of attacking plays were whistled dead before an attempt on goal could be
made.
The Sycamores had their second shot go just wide of goal in the 81st minute, as
freshman Kylie Sumner set up fellow freshman Sydney Lovelace for a header in
the center of the box, but Lovelace's attempt went just past the back post.
Indiana State put the game away in the 88th minute, as Sumner drew a free kick
just outside the penalty box on the left wing. Windisch stepped up and buried
the free kick just moments later, doubling the ISU lead to 2-0.
Windisch and Lovelace tied for the team-lead with three shots each, while all
three of Windisch's attempts were on goal.
For the game, SIUE led in total shots, 13-12, while Indiana State put eight on
goal. The Cougars led 6-1 in corner kicks. Freshman Erin Mitchell made her
first career start in goal for the Sycamores and picked up the clean sheet.
Mitchell made four saves for the match.
Indiana State defeated SIU Edwardsville at home for the first time in three
attempts, falling in both 2008 and 2010 when the Cougars traveled to the Terre
Haute. Friday's game was also the first time that the Sycamores have scored
against the Cougars in Terre Haute. Indiana State also improves to 3-10-0 in
their first game of the season.
The Indiana State women's soccer team is back in action next Friday night, when
the Sycamores travel to Indianapolis to face the Butler Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
ISU returns home next Sunday, Aug. 26, for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff with IPFW.
