TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State baseball team went into
extra innings for the fifth time in their last nine games on Tuesday night in
Terre Haute, picking a 2-1 victory in four hours and 30 minutes and 16 innings
over the visiting Valparaiso Crusaders from Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium.
Indiana State (29-9) improves to 20 games over .500 for the second time this
season, heading into their weekend matchup with 2011 NCAA Super Regional
participant Dallas Baptist. Valparaiso falls to 15-20 on the season with the
extra-inning loss.
The Sycamores had plenty of chances to put runs on the board in the first four
innings, stranding 11 runners on base in the opening four innings of play. ISU
scored a run in the third inning, as sophomore Tyler Wampler dropped a two-out
single to center to plate junior Jeremy Lucas.
The Crusaders tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out single
through the left side of the infield by Billy Cribbs. Valparaiso could have
scored more in the inning, but senior Lucas Hileman threw out Chris Manning at
the plate for the second out of the inning.
ISU and Valparaiso played 11 consecutive scoreless innings from the fifth to
the 15th, as the Crusaders and Sycamores both stranded 11 runners
during the span. Indiana State left the bases loaded in five innings, while
Valparaiso left the bags loaded on three occasions, as ISU stranded 24 runners
for the game and Valparaiso left 17. ISU's 24 runners left on base tied for
the most in NCAA history, statistics courtesy of Creighton SID Rob
Anderson.
Hileman threw out his second runner of the game to keep the score tied at 1-1
in the 15th inning, as he threw out John Loeffler to end the inning. In an interesting note, Hileman, Manning and Loeffler all
played their summer collegiate baseball last season with the Terre Haute Rex.
Senior Kyle Burnam and Wampler drew back-to-back walks to start the bottom of
the 16th inning, bringing senior Jeff Miera to the plate. Miera
dropped a bunt down the third base line, but Elliott Martin's throw to first
base went high and down the right field line, allowing Burnam to score the
game-winning run.
ISU sent eight pitchers to the mound, getting six innings from freshman Kyle Rupe in the start and 4.1 innings of one-hit work with three strikeouts from
redshirt freshman Tyler Pazik. Sophomore Kurt Kudrecki (2-1) earned the win,
forcing a flyout with the bases loaded to end the top half of the 16th.
Indiana State and Dallas Baptist begin the three-game series on Friday night at
6:30 p.m. from Terre Haute.
