SAN
ANTONIO, Texas - The Indiana State baseball team extended
their winning streak to eight games on Thursday, opening the 2012 Irish Classic
with a 2-1 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks from Nelson Wolff Stadium in San
Antonio, Texas.
The Sycamores (13-4) earned their first victory over a Big 12 opponent since
the 1995 season when their win over the Jayhawks. ISU had last won 6-3 at
Missouri on March 28, 1995.
Indiana State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, using a leadoff
single by freshman Landon Curry to start the rally. Curry stole his
team-leading seventh base of the season to move to second, advancing another 90
feet on a single to center by junior Robby Ort. Curry came home when junior
Jeremy Lucas sent a sacrifice fly to right field when he came up next.
The game remained 1-0 ISU until the seventh inning when redshirt junior Koby Kraemer and Lucas both hit doubles to double Indiana State's lead. Kraemer led
off the seventh with a double down the left field line, scoring two batters
later when Lucas doubled into the right-center field gap.
Pitching and defense was key for Indiana State to secure the victory on
Thursday, as a leadoff walk in the seventh was erased by a double play from
Kraemer, sophomore Tyler Wampler and senior Jon Hedges.
Kansas tallied back-to-back hits to start the eighth inning, putting runners on
second and third following a single by Michael Suiter and a double by Chris
Manship. Dakota Smith drove in KU's only run with a ground out to Wampler at
short when he came up next. With pinch-runner Tucker Tharp at third, leadoff
hitter Kevin Kuntz hit a sharp grounder to Hedges at first that the ISU senior
gloved and threw home to cut down the potential game-tying run. Junior starting
pitcher Dakota Bacus ended the inning with a throw from near the third base
line following a swinging bunt.
The Jayhawks rallied against the ISU bullpen in the ninth, but sophomore Kurt Kudrecki got two outs before redshirt sophomore Tyler Browning caught Suiter
looking to end the game and pick up his first save of the season.
Bacus (3-1) threw eight innings on 105 pitches, allowing one run on five hits
with four strikeouts and two walks.
Lucas drove in both of ISU's runs, while Ort and Kraemer each picked up three
hits.
Indiana State continues the 2012 Irish Classic on Friday, when the Sycamores
take on Houston Baptist at 5:00 p.m. (ET) from Wolff Stadium in San Antonio.
