The Indiana State women's basketball team returns to
Terre Haute and Hulman Center this weekend, when the Sycamores face the Bradley
Braves and Northern Iowa Panthers. ISU hosts Bradley at 7:05 p.m. on Friday,
Feb. 10, before taking on the Panthers on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2:05 p.m.
Sunday's game with UNI will also be ISU's Breast Cancer Awareness Game, in
coordination with the Wabash Valley's Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The Sycamores enter the weekend on a six-game losing skid, their longest since
dropping six in a row midway through the 2009-10 season. ISU will be looking to
avoid their longest losing streak in over 15 years when they face the Braves on
Friday. Indiana State has not dropped seven games in a row since suffering a
10-game losing streak in the 1995-96 season.
Senior Brittany Schoen will be looking to keep her string of strong shooting
performances going this weekend, as the senior has tallied at least 18 points
and four three-pointers in each of her last two games. Schoen needs just two
more treys to pass Kourtney Mennen for second place in Indiana State history
and eighth place in the Missouri Valley Conference record books, entering the
weekend with 255 three-pointers for her career.
Scouting The Braves
Bradley enters Friday's matchup at 13-10 on the season, sitting one-half
game behind Indiana State in the conference standings at 4-7 in league play.
The Braves bring a two-game winning streak to Terre Haute, after topping
Evansville (82-64) and Southern Illinois (66-50) at home last weekend. Senior
center Leah Kassing leads Bradley in scoring and rebounding, checking in with
14.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while junior guard Katie Yohn joins her
teammate in double figures at 13.1 points per contest. Sophomore Kelsey Budd
was big off the bench for the Braves in their first matchup with ISU, as the
Bradley guard scored 25 points with six three-pointers in 24 minutes off the
bench -- Budd enters Friday's game averaging 7.0 points per game for the
season. As a team, Bradley ranks 15th in the country in free-throw percentage,
knocking down 76.2% (340-for-446) this season.
A Little History
Friday's game with be the 63rd all-time meeting between the Sycamores and
Braves, with Indiana State leading the series by a 38-24 mark. ISU and BU first
met back in the 1982-83 season, with the Sycamores sweeping a pair of games.
Indiana State holds a 17-8 record against Bradley since the start of the
2000-01 season, with an all-time advantage of 22-7 when the game is played in
Terre Haute. ISU has won 14 straight games against BU inside Hulman Center.
Last Season Against Bradley
The Sycamores and Braves each defended their home court last season,
splitting their pair of matchups. Indiana State won 84-68 in Terre Haute on New
Year's Day, putting five scorers in double figures led by Shannon Thomas' 21
points. Bradley returned the favor on the final day of the regular season,
topping ISU by a score of 77-69 in Peoria. The Braves rallied from an
eight-point deficit with eight minutes to play to earn the victory.
Earlier This Year
After Indiana State jumped out to an early 18-6 lead over Bradley in
Peoria, the Braves ended the first half on a 32-8 run and never looked back in
cruising in a 79-58 victory over ISU on Saturday, Jan. 14. Sophomore Anna Munn
led ISU with 20 points and eight rebounds.
Déjà Vu
Senior Deja Mattox leads the team by averaging 16.0 points per game in MVC
play, including a career-high of 31 points against Missouri State on Friday,
Jan. 27. Mattox saw her string of seven straight games over 10 points snapped
on Sunday, Jan. 29, against Wichita State, tallying seven points. The ISU
senior missed last Friday's game at Illinois State and will be a game-time
decision for Friday's matchup with Bradley.
1,000 Point Club
Senior Brittany Schoen became the 24th member of the 1,000 Point Club at
Indiana State, as her 20-point effort against Wichita State pushed her career
total to 1,013. Schoen's 20 points were a season-high for the senior, as she
tossed in five three-pointers for game. Fellow senior Shannon Thomas also
entered the select club earlier this season, going over 1,000 points for her
career with a 31-point effort at Chicago State on Dec. 20. With her 18 points
last Friday at Illinois State, Schoen currently sits in 22nd place in ISU
history with 1,031 points for her career.
Closing In On 1,000 Points
Senior Deja Mattox is getting within striking distance of becoming the
third Sycamore to join the 1,000 Point Club at Indiana State this season.
Mattox needs 51 more points to join the club, entering Friday's game with 949
for her career after scoring 269 this season. With the addition of senior
Shannon Thomas and Brittany Schoen earlier this season, the 1,000 Point Club at
Indiana State currently holds 24 members, led by Amy Hile (1,944 -- 1983-87).
Buckets, Boards And Blocks
Senior Shannon Thomas became just the fifth player in Missouri Valley
Conference history to tally more than 200 blocks for her career, with her
personal total sitting at 202 entering the weekend. Thomas joins Illinois
State's Nicolle Lewis (2005-10) as the only players in MVC history to total
over 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 200 blocks for their careers.
Mattox Ties School Record For Triples
Against Missouri State
Senior Deja Mattox knocked down her first six three-point attempts on
Friday, Jan. 27, at Missouri State, finishing the game at 7-for-10 from long
range. Mattox's seven treys tied the school record for single-game
three-pointers, the 10th time the feat has been accomplished.
Career Highs In League Play For Munn
Sophomore Anna Munn has tallied career highs in four different categories
in ISU's MVC contests this season. The sophomore guard from Indianapolis scored
20 points against Evansville, dished out six assists against Southern Illinois
and pulled down 12 boards against Illinois State as the Sycamores opened league
play with three home wins. In ISU's road game at Bradley, Munn blocked three
shots while adding 20 points from the field.
Stepping Up In Valley Play
After scoring just 11 points in nine games during the nonconference season,
freshman Racheal Mahan has stepped up her game during MVC play. In ISU's 10
league games, the Mansfield, Ohio, native is averaging 5.8 points and 4.0
rebounds per game. She made her first career start last Friday at Illinois State,
totaling 11 points and nine boards in 31 minutes.
Hot Shooting In MVC Play
The Sycamores have shot the ball well in MVC play, going 223-of-526 (42.4%)
from the field and 68-of-176 (38.6%) from long range. Indiana State entered the
conference season shooting 37.7% as a team and 30.6% from beyond the arc in
their nonconference season.
Under 60
Indiana State is 19-1 when holding their opposition under 60 points in
their two seasons with head coach Teri Moren, including a 7-1 mark this season.
During MVC games, ISU is 7-0 under head coach Moren when teams score 59 points
or fewer. When teams go over 60 points against ISU in the last two seasons, the
Sycamores are 7-27.
Schoen Moves Up Three-Point List
Senior Brittany Schoen continues to march up the Indiana State career
standings for three-point field goals made, currently sitting in third place
with 255 for her career. The Elizabeth, Ind., product passed Lisa Verhoff (214
-- 2002-06) to enter the top of three with her third trey of the game at UIC on
Friday, Dec. 2. Kelsey Luna (263 -- 2006-10) and Kourtney Mennen (256 --
1999-03) hold down the top two spots at Indiana State. In the MVC, Schoen sits
in ninth place, needing two more to pass Mennen for eighth place.
More Than Half
Senior Brittany Schoen has pushed her career total for triples to 255 this
season while fellow senior Shannon Thomas has upped her blocked shots count to
202. Both of those totals rank higher than the rest of the 2011-12 Sycamores
put together, as the remaining roster checks in with 236 treys and 84
rejections. Senior Deja Mattox is second to both of her fellow seniors in each
category, totaling 117 three-pointers and 32 blocks for her career.
1,000 And 700
With her 31 points at Chicago State on Tuesday, Dec. 20, senior Shannon
Thomas became just the fifth player in Indiana State history to record 1,000
points and 700 rebounds for her career. The four other members of the group at
ISU are: Amy Hile (1,944 points and 916 rebounds -- 1983-87), Barbara Graves
(1,498 points and 898 rebounds -- 1979-83), Judy Ellner (1,367 points and 856
rebounds -- 1978-82) and Livia Hester (1,332 points and 753 rebounds --
1992-96).
Sending It Back
Senior Shannon Thomas is the career leader in blocked shots at Indiana
State, entering Sunday's game with 202 career rejections. The Springboro, Ohio,
product passed Laura Rudolphi for the school record last season, currently
sitting in fifth place in MVC history and needing 17 more to pass Tammi
Blackstone of Drake (218 -- 1996-2000) for fourth place.
