OXFORD,
Ohio
- Despite a career-high 14 saves from senior goalkeeper Emily Lahay, the
Indiana State women's soccer team could not find a way past the resilient
attack of the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks, falling 2-1 in the fourth minute of
overtime at the Miami Soccer Field in front of 149 fans.
The loss drops the Sycamores to 3-7-0 on the season, ending their five-game
road swing with a 2-3-0 record. The Redhawks improve to 5-2-0 with the overtime
win.
Junior Kourtney Vassar gave Indiana State the early lead, opening the game's
scoring with a goal in 16th minute off a free kick by senior Katie Geyman. After Miami was whistled for a foul on the left wing, Geyman sent a
perfect free kick into the center of the six-yard that found its way over
several defenders to Vassar in front of goal. The junior from Olathe, Kan., got
her foot on the pass for her first goal of the season.
The Redhawks got right back into the attack, taking numerous shots over the
next 15 minutes before leveling the match in the 32nd minute.
Following a MU corner kick, Kayla Zakrzewski took a pair of shots from the
right side of the penalty box, the second finding a path past the ISU defense
to even the score.
Both Indiana State and Miami both nearly added a goal in the remaining 15
minutes of action in the first half. For ISU, senior Jessica Rosenberg worked
down the right wing and sent a cross into the box in the 36th minute
that found an unmarked sophomore Shelby Troyer alone in front of goal, but
Troyer's header went wide left of goal. Miami tallied a pair of corner kicks as
time was winding down in the first half, with the second being blocked by
junior Casey Allbright as the junior defender guarded the near post.
At the break, the Redhawks led 15-6 in shots, 7-4 in shots on goal and 8-0 in
corner kicks.
The Redhawks nearly took the lead in the 53rd minute, when a long free
kick from the right wing fell to MU's Emily Hyde in the six-yard box, but Lahay
was up to the task on the point-blank shot. 10 minutes later, the Sycamores tallied
their second team-save of the match, when a shot by Zakrzewski's from the right
side of the box was blocked away by senior Morgan Wendlandt.
Lahay tied her career-high of 10 saves with a pair of stops with 10 minutes to
play, jumping and tipping one shot over the goal, before blocking another past
her far post. The senior from Sullivan, Ind., surpassed her career high in
regulation, ending the second 45 minutes with 12 saves.
The Redhawks came away with the victory in overtime, scoring on nearly an identical
shot that tied the match in the first half. Zakrzewski scored her second goal
of the match just under four minutes into the first overtime period, sending a
shot inside the near post following a corner kick.
For the match, the Redhawks set a school record with 39 shots on the afternoon,
compared to just eight for the Sycamores. MU also led 18-6 in shots on goal and
17-1 in corner kicks.
Troyer led ISU with three shots for the match, while senior Seyma Erenli topped
the Sycamores with two on goal. Vassar scored her first goal of the season in
the 16th minute, with Geyman tallying her first assist.
Lahay finished the match with 14 saves, tallying six in the first half, eight
in the second and a pair in the overtime period. The ISU senior's total ranks
sixth in the ISU record books and is the highest save total recorded for ISU
since 2005.
The Sycamores return home to open Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend,
when Indiana State hosts Missouri State on Friday, Sept. 23, at 7:00 p.m.
