TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - 2010 Indiana State standout and Chicago White Sox draftee Jacob Petricka was named among the Top 10 prospects for the entire White Sox organization late last month, checking in as the seventh best prospect in Chicago's farm system as ranked by Baseball America's Phil Rogers.
Petricka was selected with the 63rd overall pick in last summer's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, when the White Sox picked him with the 13th selection of the second round. Petricka was the fourth highest draft choice in the history of ISU's baseball program, behind Bill Hayes in 1979 (first round - 13th overall), Andy Ghelfi in 1985 (second round - 37th overall) and Casey Whitten in 1993 (second round - 53rd overall).
The former Sycamore spent time with two farm teams in the White Sox organization last summer, beginning his professional career with the Rookie Class Bristol White Sox of the Appalachian League. Petricka started in all eight of his appearances, finishing with a 2.86 ERA and a 2-4 record over 35 innings pitched, totaling 38 strikeouts and a .197 opponent's batting average. Petricka was then promoted to the Low-A Kannapolis Intimidators, where he made nine appearances out of the bullpen, finishing with an 0-1 record and a 3.72 ERA over 10 innings on the mound.
With Indiana State, Petricka was a first team all-conference selection in 2010, finishing the season with a record of 7-4 and a 4.11 ERA over 20 appearances and 15 starts. He turned up his performances when the Missouri Valley Conference season rolled around, going 4-1 over seven starts with a 2.02 ERA. Petricka also tossed the team's only complete game on April 30 with an 11 strikeout performance against Missouri State and threw eight innings in a 2-0 shutout of Wichita State on April 16.
Below is the scouting report and future projections of Petricka from Baseball America's Phil Rogers:
Scouting Report: Petricka has a powerful, relatively low-mileage arm. He usually pitches at 92-96 mph with his fastball, and Chicago clocked him at 100 during his first pro summer. He holds his velocity deep into games. He has developed a solid breaking ball as his No. 2 pitch and he flashes a serviceable changeup. To keep his innings down, he moved to the bullpen after a promotion to low Class A Kannapolis. Relief may be his best role, because he has just one plus pitch and sometimes has difficulty repeating his delivery, which costs him command.
The Future: The White Sox lack starting-pitching depth, so Petricka will remain in the rotation for now. He's still learning how to use his stuff and shouldn't be expected to move as quickly as recent Chicago draft picks Daniel Hudson or Chris Sale. Petricka should open 2011 in high Class A.
