ST. LOUIS ? Indiana State sophomore Albaro Escalera was named the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country male athlete of the week, it was announced today by the league office. Escalera took the lead midway through the men's 6K race at the Evansville Mid-America on Saturday and dominated the final 2,000 meters to take first place and lead the Sycamore men to the team victory.
Escalera's hard work over the summer paid off in a big way as the sophomore our ran Louisville's Michael Eaton, an all-Southeast Region and NCAA Qualifier a year ago, to win by almost 10 seconds. Eaton was second in 17:32.60.
Escalera completed the 6K course in 17:23.34 and led five Sycamores into the top 10. Michael Disher finished third overall in 17:42.92 with Dustin Betz fourth in 17:45.97, Andrew Lepkowski sixth in 17:54.06, and Jeremiah Vaughan eighth in 17:55.74. Craig Padgett came through with a 12th place finish in 18:05.09 while Brandon Query was 13th in 18:21.20.
The Sycamores will host the Sycamore Pride Friday starting at 3:30 p.m. The race will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
