TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A day after the Missouri State University Bears scored three runs and left 15 runners on base in a 10-3 Indiana State University victory, the Bears took advantage of nine walks by the Sycamore pitching staff to take the final game of a Missouri Valley Conference series, 5-3, over Indiana State on Senior Day at Bob Warn Field in front of 497 fans.
Prior to first pitch, the Sycamores honored nine seniors and three members of their staff who will not be returning next season. Seniors Ben Caple, Ben Ferrell, Luke Fieser, Tyler Graham, Grant Grgurich, Scott Harlan, Kevin Mann, Joe Rodriguez and Ryan Strausborger all played their final game at Bob Warn Field on Sunday. The Indiana State baseball team also honored assistant coach Casey DeGroote, who will be taking a position with the Terre Haute Rex this summer, and student managers Matthew Son and Yoji Yamashita, who both will be graduating this spring.
Missouri State (18-24, 4-8 MVC) took the early lead on Sunday, scoring three times in the top of the third inning. Center fielder Aaron Conway laced a triple into the left-center field gap to score catcher J.C. Casey from first base, with left fielder Tyler Maddox and right fielder Christian Overstreet tallying RBIs later in the inning to put MSU up 3-0.
The Bears would push their lead to 5-0 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings with shortstop Travis McComack and Overstreet picking up RBIs.
Indiana State (29-13, 8-6 MVC) cut the lead to three in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two unearned runs in the inning. With runners on second and third and two outs in the inning, Ferrell popped up to shallow right field, but the ball hit off the glove of Overstreet, allowing freshman Jeremy Lucas and junior Levi Ferguson to score.
In the ninth inning, the Sycamores put runners on the corners with one out after Lucas singled into the right-center field gap to score sophomore Kyle Burnam and cut the MSU lead to 5-3. But that was as close as ISU could get on Sunday, with MSU closer Grant Gordon striking out Graham and Ferguson to pick up his seventh save of the season.
Junior Jason Van Skike (3-2) took the loss on Sunday, allowing three hits, three runs and six walks in three innings on the mound. MSU starting pitcher Aaron Meade (2-3) picked up the victory, limiting the ISU offense to just three hits through eight innings while allowing two unearned runs.
The Sycamores take the week off due to finals week at Indiana State University, before hitting the road for the remaining nine games of their regular season schedule. ISU begins their road trip when they travel to Evansville on Friday for a three-game MVC series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET and can be heard live on ESPN Radio AM 1130 & 1300.
