SAN ANTONIO - The Indiana State University baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but fell 4-2 to the University of Texas at San Antonio on Friday night at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
The Sycamores entered the ninth inning down 4-0, but senior third baseman Luke Fieser started the late rally with a one-out single to center field. Sophomore left fielder Kyle Burnam came up next and drove a pitch down the left field line, reaching second base with a double and moving Fieser to third. Freshman Steve Ball entered the game to pinch-hit and drove in Fieser on a groundout to third base for ISU's first run of the game. Senior Grant Grgurich would single to third base to drive in Burnam to put the Sycamores down 4-2, but junior outfielder Levi Ferguson would groundout to third base to end the game.
With the loss, ISU falls to 3-1 on the season while UTSA improves to 3-0.
The Roadrunners got off to a quick start on Friday night, tallying two runs in the first inning and a single run in the second. UTSA's first two runs came on a two RBI triple with two outs from centerfielder Tyler Carpenter. In the bottom of the second, Roadrunner catcher Jeff Taliaferro scored on a wild pitch from ISU starter Jacob Petricka (1-1). UTSA would pick up its final run on a bases loaded walk by designated hitter Brett Aguilar in the eighth inning.
Petricka started the game for ISU, giving up three runs over four innings on the mound. The junior right-hander struck out four UTSA batters while allowing five walks. Freshman Tyler Browning pitched three innings in relief, allowing three hits and one run with four strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Brandon Dorsett also saw one inning on the mound, walking two Roadrunner batters.
At the plate, ISU was led by Grgurich and Fieser, who both totaled two hits. Grgurich and Ball picked up the two RBIs for the Sycamores on Friday night.
The Sycamores and Roadrunners will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game scheduled for seven innings and the second for a full nine. Senior lefty Joe Rodriguez and junior right-hander Jason Van Skike are scheduled to start the games for ISU. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
