MEMPHIS, TENN. ? The Indiana State volleyball team suffered their third straight loss Saturday evening as the IUPUI Jaguars defeated the Sycamores 3-0 in their final match of the Tiger Invitational.
The Sycamores, now 4-5 on the season, will be on the road to Butler University on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match, their last before opening the Missouri Valley Conference season next weekend.
The Jaguars won the opening set 25-23 then took the second set 25-18 marking the fourth straight match that the Sycamores have dropped the first two sets of a match. Indiana State looked like they were going to continue the match in the third set but they could not hold onto a lead late, IUPUI rallying to take the third set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
The Jaguars broke away from an 8-all tie in the first set to build a 17-13 advantage before the Sycamores rallied, tying the game at 21 on a Kristy Cox service ace. Indiana State moved in front on another Cox ace but then IUPUI scored the next two points to lead 23-22. A Sarah Agnich kill off a set by Whitney Fromm evened the match for the final time as the Jaguars scored the next two points to win 25-23.
The second set was tight through the early stages and the Sycamores had a 6-4 lead after a Jodi Stoker kill. The Jaguars came back with the set tied at several times, the last at 11 on a Kristin Kerscher kill. IUPUI scored three straight points to regain the lead and outpointed the Sycamores 11-7 the rest of the set to post a 25-18 win.
The Sycamores had the opportunity to get back into the match in the third set. Indiana State broke away from a 12-all tie on three kills by Stoker and a Jaguar error to lead 16-12. Indiana State was still up by four, 21-17 after a Kelli Whitaker kill but then the Jaguars came back, tying the match at 24. IUPUI scored the final two points of the set to deny Indiana State a win.
Stoker finished with 14 kills in the match. Fromm had 22 assists while freshman Shelbi Fouty had 11. Cox led in digs with 14.
