Sycamores to Host UNI on Senior Day

Terre Haute, Ind.—Indiana State women's soccer will face off with conference opponent Northern Iowa on Oct. 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

They Sycamores currently hold a 6-8 record with a 1-1 record in conference play. ISU got their first Missouri Valley Conference win on Sept. 30 when they came back from a two goal deficit to defeat the defending MVC Champion Drake Bulldogs by a score of 3-2.

Sophomore Katie Wells has taken the helm for Indiana State offensively. Wells is leading in points with 16 while holding five goals and six assits. Wells received MVC Offensive Player of the Week honors this past week for her efforts.

ISU is also providing a strong front defensively. On Oct. 2 Indiana State traveled to face off with the University of Tennessee Volunteers where they fell in overtime 2-1. Indiana State held the SEC team to one goal during regulation play stopping many aggressive offensive attacks in the process.

Northern Iowa is currently 1-1 in MVC play and much like the Sycamores the Panthers are under direction from first year head coach Chris Logan.

Indiana State tied UNI in 2015 and defeated them by a score of 1-0 at home in 2014.

This game will also serve as Indiana State's senior day. This season ISU will be honoring six seniors who have all made important impacts on the Sycamore soccer program. Midfielder Maddie Orf has made a name for herself in her first three seasons with the Sycamores. Currently she is placed in the top-10 of nine offensive record categories. Orf has received many postseason awards, including a 2014 First Team All MVC honors, as well as receiving a spot on the 2015 All MVC Second Team.

Another senior to add to this list is midfielder Maggie Richard. Richard played a total of 867 minutes last season and earned herself a Defensive Player of the Week title on Oct. 27, 2015. She has continually been a powerhouse for the Sycamores in the defensive midfield.

Goalkeeper Brittany San Roman is another prominent senior. San Roman logged a team high 1,536 minutes played in the 2015 season. She currently holds 5 shutouts and 80 saves. San Roman also holds a few spots in the record book, including top five in saves percentage, saves per game and goals against average.

Next is midfielder Gaelen Stejbach. Stejbach played in the first 3 games of 2015 logging a season high of 57 minutes against Idaho during the Sycamores opening weekend. Unfortunately, injury caused her to miss the final 12 games of the season, but this hasn't stopped her in her senior year. Stejbach is third on the team in points with six and goals with three. Her most notable performance was notching two goals in the 2016 season opener vs. Western Illinois.

Senior Maddie Schaak has also played a role in the Sycamore midfield. Schaak appeared in 14 games in 2015 tallying three assists and her first collegiate goal against Belmont on Aug. 28. So far in 2016 Schaak has played in 14 games starting in eight while tallying one goal and one assist and racking up nine shots.

Last is senior midfielder/forward Alex Whittington. Whittington logged a career high of 50 minutes against Northern Iowa on Oct. 18, 2015. Unfortunately Whittington has battled injury throughout her career but that has not stopped her from making an impact as a leader and remaining a valuable member of the Sycamore program.

Congratulations to the 2016 seniors and go Sycamores!

Off to Overtime

On Oct. 2 the Sycamores faced off with the Tennessee Volunteers for the first time in program history. This would also be the first time that Indiana State would go into overtime so far in 2016. In the first half ISU allowed Tennessee one goal but were able to hold them for the rest of the half. In what proved to be a physical game with each team recording 12 fouls the Sycamores continued to generate positive offensive attacks in the second half. In the 84th minute of play freshman Pam Silies slotted a ball into the back of the net after sophomore Katie Wells contested the Tennessee keeper causing a misplay. Indiana State then fell to the Volunteers in the first golden goal overtime period.

Conference Conquest

Indiana State defeated the Drake Bulldogs for their first conference win of the season on Sept. 30 by a score of 3 to 2. The game proved to be exciting as the Sycamores were down by two goals at halftime of the match. The energy shifted into Indiana States favor in the second half. In the 69th minute of play Maddie Orf scored a header off of a Katie Wells corner kick to start the comeback. 10 minutes later Wells got the equalizer off of a long ball from Katie Sullivan that bounced and she was able to head over top of the Drake keeper. Sophomore Kayla Schrubb notched the game winner and her first goal of the season when a shot rebounded off a Drake defender and she shot from the top of the 18 yard box to slot the ball into the upper right corner putting the Sycamores up 3 to 2. This was the first time since 2013 that Indiana State has defeated Drake.

Top Notch Schedule

Indiana State's 2016 schedule has four teams that the Sycamores have never played in program history. Louisville, Akron, Kent State, and Tennessee are all new additions and first time opponents for Indiana State.
