Cross Country Battles Nation's Best At Sycamores Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State cross country hosted a sampling of the nation's top teams on what started as a rainy Saturday morning at the Laverne Gibson Championship Cross County Course. Eventually the skies cleared and the Sycamores put together a solid showing against the country's best as Northern Arizona, Michigan and Duke ran on the site of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships this November.

 

Indiana State was fourth in the men's race with a score of 95 points. Duke was third with 76 points while Michigan was second with 37 points. Northern Arizona captured the men's team championship with 18 points. Matthew Baxter of Northern Arizona was the individual champion in a time of 25:01.3.

 

The Sycamore women finished third with a score of 79 while Duke was second with 47 points. Michigan won the women's title by scoring 16 points as they had seven of the eight top times in the event. Erin Finn won the event for Michigan in a time of 17:04.2.

 

Indiana State's top male runner was David Timlin who covered the 8k course in a time of 26:23.7 and finished in 15th place. Akis Madrano was 18th in a time of 26:41.5 while Daniel Swem was right behind him in 19th place as he posted a time of 26:45.7. Seth Cousins posted a time of 26:50.8 to finish in 21st place while Quentin Pierce was 22nd in a time of 27:01.1. Rounding out the Sycamores in the race was Ryan Cash who ran a time of 28:19.2 and finished in 29th place.

 

For the Sycamore women, Indiana State's Brooke Moore finished 21st in a time of 19:01.0 while Megan Doty was 24th in a time of 19:13.8. Colleen Madden posted a time of 19:16.3 to finish in 25th place. Alli Workman was 26th in a time of 19:26.6 while Taylor Rogers was 28th. Rounding out the field for the Sycamores was Aleksey Green in 30th place (19:55.3), Brittany Neely in 31st (20:01.5), Abigail Grider in 32nd (20:52.3), Taryn Thor in 33rd (20:57.3) and Emma Hayward in 34th place (21:18.1). 

 

There also was an open race featuring both men's and women's runners from Indiana State. For the men: Isaac Bentz (28:06.3), Corey Alfredson (28:19.7), Clay Reynolds (28:48.3), Ben Vertelney (29:33.6), Michael Giocola (29:44.5) and Luke Kerstiens (29:53.1). For the women, Breanna Herring (21:02.0), Cami Hansen (21:16.8); Michaela Ward (21:27.3), Danielle Muse (21:40.6), Oschtisha Jackson (27:50.0), Jamie Newsome (27:50.1), Abby McBride (27:55.6) and Ahmanah Woods (38:40.4).

 

Indiana State returns to action on Friday, September 16 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Intercollegiates.
