BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The Indiana State women's golf team is in third place after the opening day of the YSU Kickoff Invitational. The event is being held at the 5,886-yard, par-70 layout of the Mill Creek North Golf Course.
The Sycamores opened the fall campaign with a round of 308, which is in third place. Host Youngstown State leads the way with a score of 301 while Cleveland State is second at 305. Behind the Sycamores are Dayton at 310, Northern Kentucky in fifth at 311 and Ashland rounds out the six team field at 312.
"We are just seven shots behind the host for the tournament lead," head coach Greg Towne said. "Donald Ross gave us some difficulty today but we will accept the challenge again tomorrow. I am very pleased with the enthusiasm of the team. I expected some bumps early in the season, and I know the team has the ability to learn new tactics for different courses."
All-MVC performer Marissa Uradomo is tied for the tournament lead after opening the season with a score of 73. Freshman Sierra Hargens made her collegiate debut with a round of 75 and she is tied for sixth individually. Sophomore Robyn Blanchard carded a round of 77 and is tied for 12th. Sophie Benetti posted a round of 82 and is in 32nd place. Thilda Staubo carded a round of 83 and is tied for 33rd place.
"Sierra played like a veteran today in her first ever college event and I wasn't really surprised," Towne commented. "Marissa holed an incredible flop shot which had been the weakest part of her game but now looks like a strength. I have to remember that the team is still really young and the real objective is growth for down the road."
Alex Jennings round of 84 was good enough to tie for 37th place.
Uradomo is tied for first place with Youngstown State's Katlyn Shutt heading into Tuesday's final round at 73.
The final round begins at 9 a.m. (ET) on Tuesday.
