DES MOINES, Iowa – Indiana State's women's distance squad had a tremendous first day to kick off the 107th Drake Relays for the Sycamores on Thursday night, breaking the all-time 4x1600-meter relay record and notching the third-best 10K in school history as well.
The Sycamore quartet of Taylor Austin, Brooke Moore, Brittany Neeley and Abigail Grider shattered the previous record of 20:22.50 set in 2005, besting that by 25 seconds at 19:57.60 to finish fourth overall.
This constitutes the fifth school record broken by head coach Angela Martin's and women's distance coach Kyle Walsh's women's distance crew this indoor and outdoor season, following record breaking performances in the indoor 5K (Taylor Austin; 16:49.84), indoor distance medley relay (Neeley, Ahmanah Woods, Aleksey Green, Jessi Conley; 11:45.04), indoor 4x800-meter relay (Neeley, Green, Austin, Moore; 9:07.27) and the outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase (Taylor Austin; 10:18.28).
The Sycamores have also made headway on assistant AD Angie Lansing's school records in the indoor mile (4:50.12) and outdoor 1500 (4:27.92), as well as in several other events.
Adding her name to that list on Thursday night was freshman Megan Doty in her first-career 10K. Doty ran the third-fastest time in school history at 36:08.58 to finish 16th overall. She now only trails Nicole Lucas (35:00.00, 2015) and Amy Lathrop (35:47.24, 1995) on the all-time list.
Indiana State will be back at Drake Stadium bright and early on Friday, as competition begins at 9:30 a.m. ET with the women's shuttle hurdle relay.
