TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State came away with the win in both the men's and women's javelin – courtesy of seniors participating in their final home meets – after the first day of action at the Gibson Track & Field Complex for the 2016 Pacesetter Invite on Friday evening.
Senior Connor Curley – Indiana State's No. 2 pole vaulter all-time – had a very strong day in the javelin with a tail wind at his back. Curley hit a solid season-best toss of 55.64m (182-06), just barely off his PR of 55.77m (183-00) that ranks 10th all-time at ISU.
Fellow senior Whitney Walker came away with the title in the women's javelin just minutes after scoring for the Sycamores in the hammer throw. Walker won on a heave of 35.68m (117-00). Also scoring in the event was Dezha Moore, who set a new PR for the second-straight week with a toss of 33.76m (110-09).
New PRs were also the name of the game in the men's hammer throw. Sophomore Ryan Chestnut set a new career-best for the fourth-straight week this outdoor season, finishing fourth at 53.05m (174-00). Senior Jamar Brown also scored for the Sycamores in sixth place at 50.39m (165-04) – an impressive toss considering the former Sycamore Football tight end had never thrown the hammer before tonight.
ISU also had two scorers in the women's hammer: Jasmine Noel in fourth place at 45.88m (150-06) and Whitney Walker in eighth at 38.96m (127-10).
Competition will resume Saturday morning at noon with the beginning of both the field events and the 5Ks.
