TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State baseball team picked up their third win over a Big Ten foe this season with a 5-4, walk-off win over Illinois on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Andy Young and junior Cody Gardner each went yard in the win, as the Sycamores improve to 15-11 on the season.
Young led the Sycamores with a 3-for-4, three RBI performance, hitting his third home run of the season. Young started the Sycamores' scoring campaign in the bottom of the third inning as he singled to score junior Tony Rosselli and sophomore Tyler Friis, giving Indiana State the 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gardner hit his first home run of the season and his career as a Sycamore, putting the Sycamores ahead 3-0.
The Sycamores plated another run in the bottom of the sixth off of a home run over the left field wall from the bat of Young, which now puts him as the Sycamore home run leader with three on the season.
Illinois struck back in the eighth inning when the strung together a few hits that would eventually knot the score at 4-4.
The Sycamores avoided extra innings to win on a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth as junior Kyle Moore reached on an error, was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by junior Tony Rosselli, and then eventually scored as senior Andy DeJesus struck out swinging for what would have been the third out, but reached first safely on a dropped third strike from the Illinois catcher.
Andy Young lead the offense with his three hits and three RBIs, while Friis was a perfect 2-for-2. Junior lefty Weston Rivers put in six complete innings of work on the mound for Indiana State, giving up only two hits and walking one. Junior Jeremy McKinney picked up his second win of the season, throwing two innings and giving up only two hits.
Indiana State Baseball returns to Bob Warn Field on Friday and Saturday as they take on another in-state rival, the Butler Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. ET.
