CHICAGO—Sophomore pitcher Abby Klopp led the Sycamores in the cirlce and add two RBI's and her first career triple as the Indiana State Softball team defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 3-2 on the final day of the Total Control Sports Invitational Sunday.
Klopp got off to a quick start in the circle, retiring the first five batters she faced. In the bottom of the second inning, the Sycamores struck first as sophomore Brooke Riemenschneider led off with a walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Klopp to make it a 1-0 game.
The Hawkeyes answered back in the top of the third with a two out, two run home run to take a 2-1 lead over the Sycamores after two and a half innings.
The Indiana State offense came to life in the bottom of the fourth when Riemenschneider led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior Jackie Hernandez. Klopp then crushed her first career triple to score Riemenschneider and tie the game. The Sycamores then took the lead on the very next batter as senior Mallory Schneid hit a double to score Klopp and make it 3-2, Sycamores.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases with two outs but a fly out ended the inning. In the top of the seventh, the Hawks threatened again, getting two runners on with just one out, however, sophomore Bailey Benefiel enter the circle in relief of Klopp, getting the final two outs to earn the save.
Klopp threw 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and just two earned runs to earn the win while also have two RBI's offensively. Riemenschneider also went 2-2 at the plate with two runs scored.
The Sycamores will return to action on Friday when they travel to Auburn, Ala. for the Tiger Invitational.
