NEW ORLEANS – Senior thrower and former Sycamore tight end Jamar Brown ranks No. 1 nationally in the shot put by more than one foot among football players in the USTFCCCA's first rankings of the season.
Brown, an Indianapolis native that played four seasons for Indiana State's football team before joining the track team in December, holds a 16-inch advantage in the shot over Adams State's Zach Baxter at his career-best toss of 17.87m (58-07.50). That throw, performed at Rose-Hulman for the Terre Haute Double-Dual meet on Jan. 15, ranks eighth all-time in Indiana State history and second in the MVC behind All-American Josh Freeman of Southern Illinois.
Brown's rise this season is an impressive one considering he hasn't picked up a shot put since high school. That said, Brown has yet to finish a meet below 55 feet this season.
Brown and the Sycamores will compete at the EIU Friday Night Classic on Feb. 19, ISU's last tune-up before the MVC Indoor Championships at UNI on Feb. 27-28.
