INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana State senior Leeann Michl has been chasing the school record in the women's 800 meters for the past two seasons. That record was held by current Sycamore women's head coach Angela (Bruecker) Martin, who ran 2:06.05 back in 2000.
Martin has been watching Michl closely and knew that someday she would break her record.
“I was her biggest cheerleader,” Martin said. “I am very proud of her hard work throughout her Indiana State career.”
Michl came close to the record at the 2012 Auburn Tiger Track Classic when she ran a collegiate best 2:06.28. She has been close to that mark over the next year and a half but has not run any faster … until Saturday night.
The senior competed in the 800 meters at the American Milers Club Series at IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind., Saturday, and came home with a second place finish but a new school record time of 2:05.57. The mark also surpassed the “B” standard for the upcoming USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships.
Michls' effort capped an outstanding week in Sycamore track & field with Felisha Johnson placing third in the women's shot put and Greggmar Swift seventh in the men's 110 meter hurdles on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The American Milers Club Series was hosted by the Indiana Invaders. Former Sycamore Drake Sterling competes for the Indiana Invaders and finished ninth in the men's 800 meters in 1:50.27.
