ST. LOUIS -- Indiana State has captured the No. 5 seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and will begin play on Friday, March 8 at 3:35 p.m. (ET) against No. 4 Evansville inside the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The game will be televised live on MVC TV and ESPN 3 (outside of the league's six-state footprint).
The Sycamores and Purple Aces will be facing off against each other for the second consecutive game as Evansville earned a 84-68 victory earlier today (March 2) inside the Ford Center. Indiana State finished the regular season with a 17-13, 9-9 MVC record while Evansville enters the tournament with a record of 18-13, 10-8 MVC.
Indiana State took down Evansville by the score of 72-62 back on January 19 inside Hulman Center. The season series split was the first between the two teams in nine seasons as either team had swept both league games in each of the last eight seasons prior to this year.
The last time these two teams played each other in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament came on March 4, 2011 when the Sycamores won a No. 3 vs. No. 6 matchup by the score of 52-50 and ISU went on to capture the tournament championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Jake Odum hit a buzzer beater in that game to give the Sycamores the victory.
Indiana State was last the No. 5 seed in 2001 when the Sycamores became the lowest ranked team to win the tournament title. ISU opened that tournament with a 67-64 victory over Southern Illinois, went on to beat No. 1 Creighton 87-74 and won the championship with a 69-63 victory over No. 2 Bradley.
The MVC Tournament will begin on Thursday, March 7 with No. 8 Bradley facing off against No. 9 Drake at 7:05 p.m. (ET). The other Thursday night game will be No. 7 Missouri State playing No. 10 Southern Illinois at 9:35 p.m. (ET).
Friday's action begins with No. 1 Creighton taking on the winner of the Bradley/Drake game. No. 4 Evansville and No. 5 Indiana State will take on each other at 3:35 p.m. (ET).
No. 2 Wichita State will take on the winner of the Missouri State/Southern Illinois game at 7:05 p.m. (ET) before No.3 Northern Iowa and No. 6 Illinois State conclude the day at 9:35 p.m. (ET).
The semifinal for Indiana State's half of the bracket will be at 2:35 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 while the other will begin at 5:05 p.m. (ET).
The first eight games of the tournament will be televised on MVC TV and ESPN3.
Sunday, March 10 will see the championship game at 2:05 p.m. (ET). The MVC Tournament Championship will be televised nationally on CBS.
