EVANSVILLE,
Ind.
- The Indiana State women's basketball swept their road trip to close out the
2011-12 regular season on Saturday, topping in-state rival Evansville, 58-47,
inside Ford Center.
ISU ends the regular season at an even 15-15 and 9-9 in the Missouri Valley
Conference, tying for fifth place with Northern Iowa and Drake. ISU will be the
sixth seed in the tournament after the tiebreaker, facing Wichita State at 9:35
p.m. (ET) on Friday night in St. Charles, Mo.
Both Indiana State and Evansville were cold from the floor in the first half,
combining to shoot 16-for-53 (30%) from the field and just 2-for-19 (10.5%)
from three-point range. The Sycamores took a four-point lead into the locker
room thanks to back-to-back good possession to end the half as sophomore Anna
Munn grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it up for two with 45 seconds on the
clock before junior Taylor Whitley knocked down an elbow jumper with eight
seconds left to give ISU a 23-19 lead at the break.
Senior Shannon Thomas led ISU with eight points and seven rebounds at the half.
Indiana State never trailed in the second half, as Munn sank a three-pointer
just 11 seconds into the second half to give ISU a seven-point lead.
Evansville used a 9-2 run over four minutes to get within one point, at 38-37
with 8:08 remaining, but Indiana State responded with a 13-4 run of their own,
going up 51-41 with 2:38 to play on a trey by senior Brittany Schoen.
The Sycamores shot much better in the second half, especially from three-point
range, going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes of play.
Schoen led the way with 11 second-half points, going 3-for-4 from long range
and moving into sole possession of second place in MVC history as she now has
274 career three-pointers. Schoen needs 21 more treys to break Dayna Finch's (Creighton)
record of 294.
Schoen and senior Deja Mattox both finished with 13 points, while Thomas posted
a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double. Thomas also became the all-time leader in
career rebounds at Indiana State on Saturday, surpassing Amy Hile's school
record. Munn was the fourth Sycamore in double-figures, adding 11 points and
nine rebounds.
The 2012 State Farm MVC Tournament awaits the Sycamores, who will play in the
final game on Friday night against the Shockers. Indiana State and Wichita
State split their season series, with the Sycamores winning 63-51 in Terre
Haute on Feb. 26 while the Shockers won 74-63 in Wichita on Jan. 29.
