The Indiana State women's basketball team looks to sweep
a two-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when the Sycamores host the Northern
Iowa Panthers inside Hulman Center at 2:05 p.m. It will be ISU's Breast Cancer
Awareness game in coordination with the Wabash Valley's Susan G. Komen
Foundation.
The Sycamores defeated the Bradley Braves, 77-60, on Friday night in Terre
Haute, snapping a six-game losing streak and picking up their first victory
since traveling to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and topping Northern Iowa by a score of
68-62 on Jan. 12. Indiana State trailed 29-27 at halftime, but outscored
Bradley 50-31 in the second half to earn their first victory this season when
trailing at the break. It was also ISU's first 50-point half this season.
Indiana State's trio of seniors all posted double-figure scoring efforts, led
by Shannon Thomas' 24-point, 11-rebound double-double. Thomas scored 16 of her
game-high 24 points in the second half. Deja Mattox (16 points, six rebounds)
and Brittany Schoen (11 points) joined their fellow senior in double-digits.
ISU's second-half defense was also key, as the Sycamores turned 10 second-half
turnovers by the Braves into 18 points.
Scouting The Panthers
Northern Iowa enters Sunday's matchup at 15-8 on the season, sitting in
fourth place in the conference standings at 8-4 in league play. The Panthers
saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Friday, as UNI fell on
the road at Illinois State, 84-68. Senior guard Katelin Oney leads Northern
Iowa in scoring, checking in with 13.1 points, while three other Panthers also
average in double figures. Oney is joined in double-digits by senior K.K.
Armstrong (12.6 PPG), senior Rachel Madrigal (12.5 PPG) and junior Amber
Kirschbaum (10.0 PPG). In ISU's 68-62 victory over UNI earlier this season,
Armstrong tallied a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Panthers have taken
care of the basketball this season, averaging 14.6 turnovers per game and an
MVC-best +3.3 advantage in the turnover margin.
A Little History
Sunday's game will be the 60th all-time meeting between the Sycamores and
Panthers, with Indiana State leading the series by a 38-21 mark. ISU and UNI
first met back in the 1983-84 season, with the Sycamores sweeping a pair of
games. Overall, Indiana State is 21-7 against Northern Iowa when the teams meet
in Terre Haute with UNI snapping an eight-game ISU home winning streak last
season.
Last Season Against Northern Iowa
The Panthers won both of their matchups with the Sycamores last season,
outscoring Indiana State by an average of 26 points in their pair of games. UNI
won 71-46 in Terre Haute to open the MVC season and 73-46 in Cedar Falls in the
second-to-last game of the regular season schedule. Senior Deja Mattox led
Indiana State against Northern Iowa last season, averaging 10.5 points and 7.5
rebounds per game.
Earlier This Year
Indiana State led wire-to-wire on Thursday, Jan. 12, in Cedar Falls,
picking up a 68-62 victory inside the McLeod Center. Senior Shannon Thomas led
the Sycamores with an 18-point, 14-rebound double-double, with fellow seniors
Deja Mattox (15) and Brittany Schoen (12) also going into double figures for
ISU.
Déjà Vu
Senior Deja Mattox leads the team by averaging 16.0 points per game in MVC
play, including a career-high of 31 points against Missouri State on Friday,
Jan. 27. Mattox has scored at least 10 points in eight of her 10 games in
league play, including three games of at least 20 points. The senior missed
ISU's game at Illinois State on Feb. 3, but returned last Friday against
Bradley and went for 16 points and six rebounds.
1,000 Point Club
Senior Brittany Schoen became the 24th member of the 1,000 Point Club at
Indiana State, as her 20-point effort against Wichita State pushed her career
total to 1,013. Schoen's 20 points were a season-high for the senior, as she
tossed in five three-pointers for game. Fellow senior Shannon Thomas also
entered the select club earlier this season, going over 1,000 points for her
career with a 31-point effort at Chicago State on Dec. 20. With her 11 points
last Friday against Bradley, Schoen currently sits in 21st place in ISU history
with 1,042 career points.
Closing In On 1,000 Points
Senior Deja Mattox is getting within striking distance of becoming the
third Sycamore to join the 1,000 Point Club at Indiana State this season.
Mattox needs 35 more points to join the club, entering Friday's game with 965
for her career after scoring 285 this season. With the addition of senior
Shannon Thomas and Brittany Schoen earlier this season, the 1,000 Point Club at
Indiana State currently holds 24 members, led by Amy Hile (1,944 -- 1983-87).
Schoen Moves Up Three-Point List
Senior Brittany Schoen currently sits in second place in Indiana State
history for three-point field goals made with 257 for her career. The
Elizabeth, Ind., product passed Kourtney Mennen (256 -- 1999-03) on Friday
against Bradley for second place, now needing just seven more to pass Kelsey
Luna (263 -- 2006-10) become the all-time leader at Indiana State.
Buckets, Boards And Blocks
Senior Shannon Thomas became just the fifth player in Missouri Valley
Conference history to tally more than 200 blocks for her career, with her
personal total sitting at 202 entering the weekend. Thomas joins Illinois
State's Nicolle Lewis (2005-10) as the only players in MVC history to total
over 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 200 blocks for their careers.
Tough Competition
Entering the weekend, the Sycamores hold the second-best strength of
schedule ranking among teams in the Missouri Valley Conference, playing the
76th toughest schedule in the country. Of Indiana State's 12 nonconference
opponents, only one began the weekend with a losing record within their
respective conference (Northern Illinois).
Under 61
Indiana State is 20-1 when holding their opposition under 61 points in
their two seasons with head coach Teri Moren, including an 8-1 mark this
season. During MVC games, ISU is 8-0 under head coach Moren when teams score 60
points or fewer. When teams go over 60 points against ISU in the last two seasons,
the Sycamores are 7-27.
Hot Shooting In MVC Play
The Sycamores have shot the ball well in MVC play, going 247-of-587 (42.1%)
from the field and 74-of-191 (38.7%) from long range. Indiana State entered the
conference season shooting 37.7% as a team and 30.6% from beyond the arc in
their nonconference season.
Stepping Up In Valley Play
After scoring just 11 points in nine games during the nonconference season,
freshman Racheal Mahan has stepped up her game during MVC play. In ISU's 11
league games, the Mansfield, Ohio, native is averaging 5.6 points and 4.0
rebounds per game.
Mattox Ties School Record For Triples
Against Missouri State
Senior Deja Mattox knocked down her first six three-point attempts on
Friday, Jan. 27, at Missouri State, finishing the game at 7-for-10 from long
range. Mattox's seven treys tied the school record for single-game
three-pointers, the 10th time the feat has been accomplished.
More Than Half
Senior Brittany Schoen has pushed her career total for triples to 257 this
season while fellow senior Shannon Thomas has upped her blocked shots count to
204. Both of those totals rank higher than the rest of the 2011-12 Sycamores
put together, as the remaining roster checks in with 240 treys and 84
rejections. Senior Deja Mattox is second to both of her fellow seniors in each
category, totaling 119 three-pointers and 32 blocks for her career.
Double-Doubles
Senior center Shannon Thomas recorded her 27th career double-double on
Friday against Bradley, scoring 24 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. In
those 26 games that Thomas has went over 10-and-10, the Sycamores have gone
16-11 overall and 12-5 in conference/tournament play. ISU is 5-4 this season
when Thomas records a double-double.
Dominant At Home
Thanks to the home-court advantage of the Hulman Center, the Indiana State
women's basketball team has been dominant in Terre Haute over the past 10
seasons. Since the 2002-03 season, ISU has played 130 games inside Hulman
Center, coming away with victories on 101 occasions. ISU is 8-3 at home this
season.
Sending It Back
Senior Shannon Thomas is the career leader in blocked shots at Indiana
State, entering Sunday's game with 204 career rejections. The Springboro, Ohio,
product currently sits in fifth place in MVC history and needs 15 more to pass
