TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Senior Kelsey Luna was named to the All-MVC Second Team, while freshman Taylor Whitley was selected to the All-Freshman Team, the Missouri Valley Conference office announced Wednesday. Postseason honors were determined by a vote of the league's head coaches, sports information directors and a media panel.
Entering the MVC Tournament, Luna is averaging 14.7 points and 4.5 rebounds over 29 games this season. The senior from St. Louis recently became the Sycamores' all-time leader in career 3-pointers made and has 262 triples over the last four years, good for fifth in conference history. Luna also leads the nation in free throw percentage at a .925 clip.
Luna previously earned all-conference honors as a junior and was named to the preseason All-MVC Team entering 2009-10. A two-time Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine, she was also chosen earlier this week as the Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time in her career, becoming the first women's basketball student-athlete in MVC history to take the honor in back-to-back seasons.
Whitley is the first Sycamore named to the All-Freshman Team since Luna did so in 2007. A native of Geneva, Ill., Whitley has averaged 7.9 points and 2.8 boards per contest and has started every game since Jan. 8 against Illinois State. She had a career performance against Drake at Hulman Center, finishing with 22 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and a 10-for-13 effort at the free throw line.
Indiana State has had 15 student-athletes combine for 24 All-MVC first-team, second-team and honorable mention awards, while 12 players have also been included for all-freshman accolades in program history.
Indiana State enters the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday, March 11 as the league's No. 8 seed and will take on No. 9 Southern Illinois. Tipoff from The Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo., is set for 6:05 p.m. (ET).
