TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? The final weekend of volleyball has arrived for Indiana State University with two more chances for the Sycamores to close out the season on a positive note. ISU will entertain the Missouri State Bears on Friday and will conclude the regular season on Saturday by hosting the Wichita State Shockers. Both games begin at 7 p.m. (ET) in the ISU Arena.
Saturday's game will be the final appearance of their ISU careers for five Sycamore seniors: Whitney Fromm (Snohomish, Wash.), Kristen Kerscher (Toledo, Ohio), Jodilynne Stoker (Ames, Iowa), Stephanie Volden (McFarland, Wis.), and Kelli Whitaker (New Palestine, Ind.). These five have formed the nucleus of Indiana State's rebuilding effort over the past four seasons.
Fromm has keyed the Sycamore offense as a setter since first stepping onto the court in a Sycamore uniform. She currently ranks third in ISU history in career assists with 2,914, moving past Annette Runge (2,882 from 1988 to 1991) last week with 38 assists at Illinois State. She recorded the ninth best single season assist total last season with 1,100 assists. Fromm also ranks in the top 15 in career digs with 820.
Kerscher has been an offensive threat from the right side since she arrived on the Indiana State campus, playing in 29 of ISU's 30 games during her freshman year, 25 of 26 games as a sophomore, and 28 of 31 games as a junior. She is averaging 1.38 kills per set from the right side with 126 career blocks and 244 career digs.
Another dominant offensive threat from that Class of 2006 is Stoker, an outside hitter that is nearing a milestone that few volleyball players reach in their collegiate careers. Stoker enters the final two games of the season with 984 kills, needing just 16 kills this weekend to record her 1,000th career kill, a mark accomplished only nine times in Indiana State history. She currently ranks 10th in career kills and also ranks fourth in career total attacks with 3,413. Stoker posted the seventh best single season of total attacks in 2008 with 1,138.
Volden has been a blocking specialist for the Sycamores during her four years at Indiana State. The senior currently ranks eighth in career solo blocks (69), eighth in career block assists (203), and seventh in career total blocks (272). She has played in all but one game during her career.
The senior front line rounds out with another outside hitter in Whitaker who set the freshman record for kills per set at 3.11 during her initial campaign with the Sycamores. She currently has 749 career kills and 89 career blocks. Her court presence, work in the classroom, and involvement in the community were honored in 2008 by the Missouri Valley Conference as became the first ISU volleyball player to receive the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
